LJSilicon's Shareware Status Page
Back in the earlier days of the Apple ][, a new marketing scheme was launched--SHAREWARE. The theory behind this new scheme was that software could be tried before purchasing. You could download or acquire SHAREWARE in many different ways; mailings from the developer, disks of the month at user group meetings, download it from a BBS or an on-line service or pay someone to send you the SHAREWARE that you would have to register if you liked it and want to keep it. SHAREWARE became so wide-spread that a professional organization known as ASP, the Association of Shareware Professionals was established. Perhaps their definition of SHAREWARE is easier to understand.
"Shareware is sometimes called "User Supported" or "Try Before You Buy" software. Shareware is not a particular kind of software, it's a way of marketing software. Users are permitted to try the software on their own computer system (generally for a limited period of time) without any cost or obligation. Payment is required if the user has found the software to be useful or if the user wishes to continue using the software beyond the evaluation (trial) period.
Why, you may be wondering is LJ going on about SHAREWARE in this manner. Well, I just thought that you might be interested in how many SHAREWARE fees that I've received since establishing LJSilicon's Treasure Chest.
