As the smoke cleared along the Gettysburg battle field on July 3rd, 1863 the remnants of the Pickett, Pettigrew, Trimble charge limped back to their lines. "Fredericksburg, Fredericksburg, Fredericksburg "
About the battle of Fredericksburg, the French Historian Comte de
Paris , in his "History of the Civil War in America" wrote;
The Army of the Potomac had fought gallantly; it had not lost a single cannon, all attacks
being made by masses of infantry; it had experienced neither disorder nor rout. But the
defeat was complete, and its effects were felt throughout the entire country as keenly as
in the ranks of the army. The little confidence that Burnside had been able to inspire in
his soldiers had vanished, and the respect which everyone entertained for the noble
character of the unfortunate general could not supply its place.
Welcome to the Battle of Fredericksburg Homepage. Although there are some fine Fredericksburg sites already on the web, I hope to add to one of the most under publicized battles of the Civil War. Besides the usual history of the battle I also provided a "quote" page which will contain statements of those whom participated in the battle, giving the reader a better atmosphere of what took place. I will be updating my site constantly and welcome all suggestions.
