JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT
For the past several years the Goodyear School has participated in the Junior
Achievement Program. This program involves having a person from the business
world work with a group of students for one hour a week for six weeks. The
business volunteer teaches the children about business and economics. The
children are taught about free enterprise and how to be "workplace
ready."
The Junior Achievement Curriculum includes all of the children in the school
from kindergareten to grade five, The children learn about their future
roles as workers, consumers, and employers. Through lively discussions and
activities basic economic principles are taught and the children learn to
apply the principles to their own lives.

Medicine plays a very important part in our lives. Medicine comes in
many different forms. An example of some are needles, liquid, creams and
capsules. The pill form of medicine is one of the most popular. The medicine
in these pills might be asprin, antibiotics and obviously, the cold medicines.
Some medicines are man made, while others are made by plants and animals,
like snake venom or the aloe plant. For minor illnesses you can buy medicines
at the store, but for serious diseases you must have a doctor prescribe
them for you.
Some medicines work at different paces. The more milligrams in a medicine
the faster the effect. Usually if you are sent into the hospital it is to
cure you from a disease. If you go the the store to buy medicine it's probably
to treat you.
My life without medicines would be bad because lots of people would die
and even some of my relatives could. When I got sick, I would stay sick
longer and feel worse without medicine. Now with all these good modern medicines
I can go outside and go on hiking trips and maybe get bit by a snake. But
I won't get that sick from the bite because of the great medicines we have.
So medicine plays a great part in our lives.

My life without rubber would be impossible! Rubber is one of the most
important things in the United States. Nothing but rubber can bend, stretch,
twist, turn, and then snap back into its regular shape. Without this invention
we would not have transportation, shoes, bouncy balls, bikes, hair ties,
or elastic.
Rubber is a strong stretchable material. If you have ever found a rubber
band under a heater it would snap. That is because it is dried out. The
rubber itself has no more strength. We use rubber so often that the typical
automobile has six hundred parts! Manufacturers make between forty thousand
and fifty thousand rubber products. Rubber's most important use in the United
States is the manufacturing of tires and inner tubes. Millions of these
are needed to keep our transportation system up and rolling.
Rubber is very important in the United States. Without it life would be
pretty much impossible! We have many uses for rubber such a tires to tennis
balls and hoses to shoe soles. Without rubber we would be wearing moccasins
and we would use buckets instead of hoses to water our gardens. Life would
be pretty dull. Civilized men have known about rubber for centuries, but
only for two hundred years or so have they made use of it. Indians first
discovered it, but the Spanish explorers were given the credit for telling
people of this dried gum of a tree.

My life without televistion would be very boring. Without television
I would not have anything to entertain me, and I would not be able to watch
videos.
Televisions look like big square blocks about eighteen inches high with
a glass screen. When you buy a television it usually comes with a remote
control. A remote control usually looks like a rectangle shape with many
buttons. You can buy many accessories for a television like a VCR, video
game system, or a sattelite which lets you access more channels. There are
also big screen televisions about fifty inches wide, and pocket televisions
about one inch wide that you would usually bring on long car trips.
To transform the image into a series of pulses, the camera is equipped with
an image orthicon tube. A receiving antenna captures the broadcast wave
and carries it down to the television set. Inside the television set the
video and audio signals are separated by special electrical circuits. The
audio signal is amplified and turned into sound in the speaker. After amplification
the video signal passes into the kinescope. This is the heart of the television
receiver.
My life without television would be extremely boring. I would not have any
entertainment. I would not be able to play video games or watch videos.
Without television thousands of people would not have a job. And without
the news hundreds of people, and I would not know what was going on in the
world.

My life without electricity would be very boring because there would
be a lot of things that I could not do and hear. There' s a lot of things
you can't use or make like a computer or a television. They are both run
by electricity but there is a lot more things like a radio, lights, stove,
sometimes T.V., computer, microwave, refrigerator, car and lots more. The
TV and the computer are my favorite and are both worked by electricity and
can do a lot of things. A computer can play games and music, and help you
find information you need like history. You can also go on the Internet
and find out about just about anything you want to learn. The T.V. is cool
because you can watch cartoons and other shows. Lights are one of the best
inventions made so we can see in the dark.

My life without TV would not be good because I think my life is already
good with it. Yes, I think my life is terrific with TV, because TV is terrific.
A TV is a square shaped plastic box with a remote. It also has a channel
selector on the front of the TV. In the television you can use cable or
just the regular channels. They are 12, 13, 14, and some others but cable
has about one through one hundred. Some people have missing channels. The
pay per view channels are new movies that just came out.
A television works when a person and a crew make a movie or a show. They
have to tape it with a camera. After they tape it, and everything is done
they put it on a television by telephone wires. Then it goes to a television
where a person can use a remote control to turn the teleision on. The screen
comes on by an electric beam that goes on the shadow mask and creates a
picture. The camera tube is very important. It produces a video signal for
one of the primary colors. Light striking the tube causes a pattern of electrical
beams to form on its target. As an electrical beam moves around the target,
electrons flow from the target and become one of the primary color signals.
My life without television would be boring because there would be nothing
to do. We would not be able to see the news or see a funny or scarey show.
Kids love to watch television and I'm a kid.

My life without the radio would be horrible and very boring. I would
not be able to listen to cds or tapes. I also wouldn't be able to listen
to the many different kinds of tunes.
Radios are mostly black. A radio is a rectangular shape, but can also come
in many different shapes and sizes. A radio is one of our most important
means of communication. It enables us to send words, music, codes, and other
signals to any part of the world. People also use radios to communicate
far into space. I can't imagine my life without one.
The radio is made up of many parts that help it work. A radio can be powered
by a battery or can be plugged into an outlet. The main parts of a radio
are the antenna, the tuner, the amplifiers, and the speakers. The on and
off button help you control the radio. The tuner lets you tune into a station.
You can also choose from A.M. or F.M. to listen to.
My life without the radio would unbelievable. I wouldn't be able to bother
my parents by turning it up real loud. I wouldn't be able to hear what the
weather is before I go to school. I wouldn't be able to hear the different
kinds of music like rock and roll, soft rock or any other kind of music.
If I didn't have the radio I think I would die. I would have no fun at all.

I cannot imagine my life without the telephone. If I did not have a phone
I would die, because I would not be able to talk to my friends or family.
Plus, if there was an emergency I would not be able to call 911.
A telephone comes in all different sizes like small, big, square and rectangular.
You can also put them in many different places. Phones can come shaped as
animals, celebraties, cartoon characters, cars, and space ships. Some phones
have a speaker and some even have answering machines on them. There are
some telephones that have no wires and are called cordless phones. You can
carry them anyplace.
A telephone sends and receives sound by electricity. When a person speaks
into the telephone sound waves made by the person's voice go into the mouthpiece.
An electric current carries the sound to the telephone of the person being
spoken to. A phone has two important parts, the transmitter and the receiver.
If I did not have a telephone my life would be useless! With the telephone
you can talk to people from different states. There might be urgent news
to tell somebody, and without the telephone you would have to go over to
their house and tell them. But what would you do if they lived in another
state? If I didn't have a phone, life would be no fun.

My life without television would be extremely boring. No one would be
able to see basketball games without spending alot of money.
The television or "TV" is a box that shows programs or "TV
shows." The TV cannot just show only TV shows, it can show things like
the news which tells what happens all around the world. TV's can come in
different colors or sizes. TV's also show pictures in different colors.
Some old TV's only show pictures in black and white. Now TV's show pictures
in color. I think the TV is the best invention in the world.
The television works by TV cameras. It all starts by filming or recording
a TV show. The show is recorded and sent to your TV by cables.
The picture has to get to your TV screen, and this is how it does. The cable
is shortened and is fed into the back of your TV. The picture gets into
the TV screen black and white. Then what is called a gun shoots three (3)
colors into the black and white screen and forms a color picture. The colors
are red, blue, and green. That is how your TV works.
My life without TV would be really boring. Without it we would have to go
to a certain place to see what happens. Without TV the world couldn't be
entertained. TV also saves money. If you wanted a basketball game you would
have to spend alot of money to go to it. TV also let's people see what is
happening and when it's happening. It is possible that TV could save your
life. If a tornado, hurricanie, flood, or earthquake were coming TV could
tell you. In many ways TV is important. To entertainng to what's happening
to even saving our lives, TV is very important.

My life without computers would be terrible. It would be devastating
to me because I wouldn't be able to play and learn. Usually computers come
in different shapes, sizes, and different kinds. There are a lot of different
kinds of computers like Macintosh, IMB, Packered Bell and so on. Some computers
usually come with a mouse or a joy stick. Also, some computers come with
disk and CD drives. Most computers only come with disk drives.
Computers are a remarkable invention because they store memory for people.
Without computers people with big businesses would be lost. Even the Air
Force would be lost too because they use computers to set courses for the
airplanes.
Computers work with circuit boards and microchips and a thing called a C.P.U
(Central Processing Unit). They work by processing information in the form
of 1s and 0s in binary, the 1s and 0s act as kinds of on and off switches.
The information is stored and transferred in things called bytes. A byte
is usually eight to sixteen bits long. The byte of binary goes through the
C.P.U. which is kind of like a highway with a lot of roads going in and
a couple going out. The information or binary is processed and then sent
to the appropriate place. In the case of the number 1 that we typed, the
computer read the binary series of 0s and 1s determined that it was the
number 1 and printed it on the computer screen. This is all done in microseeds.
My life without computers would be awful. It would affect my life because
I use computers to help me do my homework, learn and play. I also use computers
to build games for my family. It would also affect my life because after
school I would have no fun. My life wouldn't be the same if computers weren't
invented.

My life without a snowblower would be very hard. A snowblower helps you
clean driveways or parking lots. The snowblower is also helpful for snow
plowers because it can clean up what the plow has left behind.
A snowblower has blades in the front and a shoot that throws the snow to
any direction that you want. Some snowblowers can go on the front of a sit-down
lawn mower, but most are upright with handles like a wheel barrel. It has
two wheels near the base. Most snow blowers run on regular gas, but some
have to be charged. I think that is harder then using gas. To start the
engine you use a key then pull a leaver.
My life would be hard without a snowblower. It is faster then shoveling.
I have a very big driveway. It makes my life easier and it is kind of fun
to do.

My life without the television would be pretty boring. My life would
be boring because I couldn't watch moveis, and watching movies is awesome
especially in school. I also wouldn't be able to watch the news, or do my
favorite thing- that's playing video games.
The television is a big box with a piece of glass on it. Televisions come
in all sizes. Most people put it on a stand or on a bureau, some people
even put it on the floor but only if it's too big for a stand.
The television works if you plug it into an outlit. The television has many
different stations. Most people have cable in their family rooms so they
can watch whatever they want. Usually the people without cable are kids
with televisions in their room. Some mini televisions work by "D"
batteries. If the television has lines on it that means the cables aren't
tight enough.
My life without the television would be boring because I wouldn't know the
news, watch sports, watch movies, or play video games. If I ever lost the
electricity in my house I could just use the television that takes "D"
batteries.

My life without televison would be boring. I couldn't watch football
games with my father or watch the news and learn what's going on in other
places. I also would not know what the weather was going to be. Television
is a box that you watch shows on. They come in all sizes. You can put it
on the floor, desk, stand, entertainment center or a bureau.
A television starts when you plug it in an electrical outlet. It sends and
receives images from other places. You can turn it on or off. When lines
appear in the screen that means you have to tighten the cables, and the
lines will go away. You need electricity to run it. The electricity comes
from wires connected to the telephone pole. How it gets the electricity
is from somewhere near a waterfall. They have an electricity plant, and
it gets electricity from the running water and sends it to other plants,
and then it comes to our home, so we'll get electricity, and we can work
our electronics.
My life without television would be boring. I wouldn't know what's going
on in other places in the world. I wouldn't be able to watch sports games
and play sega, playstation or ninento 64. I wouldn't know what the weather
was or how to dress.

My life without the automobile would not be very easy. We would have
to live near our jobs, and we would not be able to take vacations far from
our homes. There would be a lot less jobs in our country. The air pollution
would be decreased, and our environment would be a lot better.
The automobile comes in all different colors, shapes, and sizes. It can
be a truck, a car, a bus, a taxi, a jeep, or an off road vehicle. It can
cost from one thousand dollars to one million dollars. The passenger car
is designed for safety. The dashboard has thick padding, but not enough
in case of accidents.
All automobiles have an engine made up of many parts. There are two kinds
of fluids that the automobile cannot run without. One fluid is gasoline
and the other is oil. When our cars break down we have to bring them to
a Mechanic. You have to go to Auto Mechanics School to learn how to fix
cars, because there are so many parts.

If I had to live in a world without books, I would be miserable. The
reason that I would be miserable is because I love to read. If we didn't
have books I would go crazy because it would be hard to learn in school
you wouldn't know what a word means, or be able to find out about famous
people. It would be hard for everybody.
A book is an object with a lot of pages made of paper. The papers have words
and sometimes pictures on them. The pages are placed into a cover that tells
the name of the book, the title and the person who wrote the book, the author.
There are all different kinds of books such as horror, myths, and my favorite
fairy stories. You can get books at a library, a book store, or you could
write one for fun. I like to read, but sometimes the words are hard, or
if it's a school book, sometimes I don't understand the questions or problems.
Sometimes the book might not be in my grade level, and it might be somewhat
hard or even boring.
In order to be able to understand the book, you must be able to read. If
you can't read a book because you haven't learned you could have an adult
read to you.
My life without books would be hard, because you couldn't understand a word's
meaning you would probably look in the dictionary, but a dictionary is a
book, and we don't have books so you wouldn't know what the word means!
Plus the authors of books such as E.B. White, Louisa May Alcott, would be
"nobodies" because they write books. All of the books that are
here now such as dictionaries, school books, reading books, and encyclopedias
wouldn't be because there are no such things as books.

My life without a camera would be sad. I could never look at old pictures
of all the fun times in my life like my birthday party, holidays, or my
first time on ice skates. You can only do something for the first time once,
so why not take a picture to remember it? Any time you want you can still
share the joy with yourself and a family members remembering memorable events
you don't want to forget!
A camera can be any size but it is usually a hand held size. Cameras are
usually square or rectangular shaped. Then there is a circular shape that
jets out which is called the lens. The lens helps the picture look clear.
On the square unit there is something like a storage compartment where the
film is stored. Usually above that there is a tiny clear square where you
can see what you are taking a picture of. Then there is a button to press
to take a picture of whatever you please. Most cameras have a film counter
that reminds you how many pictures you have taken. Later, a device called
a timer was developed which allows a camera to take a picture on its own.
I'd recommend using a camera. it is one of the easiest ways of expressing
how you feel!
A camera is basically a dark box with film at one end and an apeture (a
hole) at the other end. Light enters a camera forming an image on the film.
See, a camera works like the human eye. When the object or scene enters
the camera it hits a mirror inside upside down. Then, the image reflects
up forming the scene or object right side up again.
There is a special way the camera is allowed to freeze the picture. Most
cameras have a lens that increases the amount of light that enters the camera
which can record the picture in a fraction of a second! The lens also improves
the quality of the picture.
Some cameras only have a pin hole apeture. A pin hole apeture can only receive
a small amount of light. Because of this, it may take several seconds for
light to enter the camera and make an image on the film.
There are many other types of cameras. The most popular tpe of camera is
the point and shoot camera. This particular camera has many automatic features
including focusing, light exposure, and film advance. The Instant Camera
is able to produce a picture almost immediately using a special camera in
the film. The convenient part is that the picture shoots out of the picture
instantly. And we wouldn't have any movies to watch if it weren't for the
motion picture camera. This camera takes pictures that re-create the motions
of the object when film is projected on a screen.
My life without a camera would not be very exciting. I would not be able
to remember happy times about my life, family, or friends. I would not be
able to remember holidays, birthdays, vacations, or happy times in my life!
Just recently I went ice skating on ice skates for the first time! I would
never want to forget that! Also, I turned eleven last month. All my friends
came to my rollerskating party, and we had a blast! It would be great for
it to happen all over again. It would seem as if I were there again by just
by looking at a picture of the party! Because of the camera, it is possible
to get pictures of historical and famous places. I would have to travel
far away such as The Statue of Liberty, or The Golden Gate Bridge! Photographers
can become rich by taking pictures of famous people such as movie stars.
Also magazines would not be very exciting without pictures and colors to
catch your eye. I mean it is always fun to learn about new, famous or just
ordinary people with a picture to go with it! If you think about it, what
is the first thing you look at when you buy a magazine? Well, I would say
"the pictures!"
I notice that in mostly science books at school there are alot of pictures
that help explain science facts. I know that pictures help me in science
like the different biomes on the earth. How would I know what a cactus looks
like without a picture without having to travel all the way to Arizona to
see one! So in the future when there is a moment you don't want to forget,
the easiest way is to just pick up a camera!

My life without a clock will be very confusing. Without clocks, people
will have a hard time figuring out when to do something. Clocks help in
many ways like getting up in the morning or getting to school on time. Without
them, people will have a very hard life.
A clock is a device that measures time. They can be any size and shape.
I am describing a circular shaped clock. It has the numbers one through
twelve in a circle on its face. They have two main hands. The hands point
to the number. The main hands are called the hour hand and the minute hand.
They are different sizes so you can tell which one is which. Some of these
kinds of clocks have a second hand that goes around the clock face every
second. Not all clocks are like the one I described. Some clocks are digital.
They have no hands. They have numbers that change every second, minute,
and hour. Some clocks tick every second.
All clocks have two main characteristics to work. Once they need to have
a constant or regular action or process to mark off equal amounts of time.
Two, they must have a way to keep track of and display the amounts of time.
A grandfather clock, for example uses the regular back and forth movement
of the pendulum to mark off equal amounts of time. It uses a series of gears
to move the hands of the clock. Some grandfather clocks use heavy brass
pendulums, and I think look very attractive.
My life without clocks would be unorganized. I wouldn't know when or where
to go. I wouldn't know when to get out of bed and go to bed. I wouldn't
even know when to go to school! I would be late for everything. But wait-there
wouldn't be any such thing as late!!

My life without a car would not be fun. The automobile is the most important
part of transportation.
Cars can be ordered in every color that you can think of. Cars have a chasis,
engine, brake system and much more. Newer cars can have added luxuries such
as a CD player, leather heated seats or a sun roof. Cars are now mandated
to have air bags factory installed. Sporty cars such as the Corvette, Lamborghini,
and Ferrari are involved in races such as the famous Lamonte.
How does a car work?
First you need a battery and a full tank of gas and a key. Put the key into
the ignition slot. Ignition begins when the key turns the starting switch.
Electricity flows from the battery to the starting motor, which cranks the
motor. The accelerator opens the throttle letting the pistons draw the fuel
mixture into the cylinders. The fuel pump supplies gasoline under the high
pressure to the fuel injectors which deliver it to the cylinders.
My life without a car would be awful. I would not see my family. You would
not be able to go on vacation. When you got hurt you would have to walk
to the hospital.

Medicine today has changed in so many ways. People are living longer
today than ever before. With the help of medicine, doctors are finding cures
for many diseases like aids, and some cancers.
There's so many different kinds of medicine. For many reasons, you take
medicine. You take it when you're sick and to keep from becoming sick.
My life without medicine would be very different. I was born with a heart
murmer, so I have to take penicillin. Penicillin is a powerful antibiotic
derived from mold and used to treat certain types of bacterial infections.
Medicine works in many ways. It helps fight diseases and prevent it. When
my grandmother was 48 years old in 1995, she was diagnosed with pancreatic
cancer. They gave her 4 months to live, and she lived for over 2 years with
the help of chemotherapy. She started off with treatments each month, and
it went to every week. In the last couple of weeks of my grandmother's life
she had to take strong pain medicine to stop the pain. Then she took sleeping
pills to help her sleep. Medine is a big part of my life because it helped
keep my grandmother alive.

My life without an air conditioner would be dreadful, especially during
the summertime. My hands would be tired from all that fanning. Luckily,
I don't live in the desert.
Air conditioners work in an amazing way. When people are hot they use a
lot of things to cool off, mostly air conditioners. People who put air conditioners
in their rooms sleep better, and those who have air conditioned airplanes,
trains, ships, buses, an automobiles make traveling more comfortable in
hot weather. A window air conditioner cools room air by means of a refridgerant.
The liquid refrigerant absorbs heat from the air and becomes a vapor as
it flows through the evaporator. A compressor pumps the vapor to the condenser,
which discharges the heat and turns the vapor back to liquid.
My life without an air conditioner would be terrible. It would be a very
hard summer. I would be hot all day. My hands would be sore from fanning
myself. Even if I go swimming my arms and legs would be tired. I wouldn't
be relaxed. I wouldn't be able to sleep. I would feel sticky and sweaty
all day. I'd have to take alot of showers and baths. I'd also have a bad
temper because of the heat. If I'm sticky and smelly like a skunk, no one
would get near me.

My life without the radio would be very boring. What would I do if I
didn't want to watch television?
The radio is a rectangular shaped machine that you can listen to music with.
A radio can come in all different shapes, sizes, and colors. It could even
be a miniature white radio that is in the shape of an oval or any different
shapes. The way a radio would help you relax is that you could lay down
and just listen to music.
The way a radio works is the antenna picks up sound waves that turn into
noise that makes sound. The sound waves have different frequencies. The
frequencies can be strong or weak. If the antenna picks up the strong frequency
then you will be able to hear the words or music clearly. If the radio picks
up the weak frequency, then you won't really be able to hear the music clearly.
There are two different kinds of waves. They are called A.M. and F.M. waves.
The way a radio can tell the difference is that the F.M. are more like audio
waves while the A.M. waves are like audio-waves and radio waves combined.
The radio doesn't just pick up the waves by itself. There is also a transmitting
tower that sends the waves to each house. Radios don't just pick up waves
with music and news from the station. A radio can also play CD's or tapes
or even both. The way a radio plays CD's is it read the lines on the CD's.
That's why if the CD is scratched it either skips that part or keeps repeating
it. A radio reads a tape by the thin brown piece of tape inside of it. The
tape inside of it has words or dots on it that it reads. To work, a radio
needs all the chips and transmitter inside of it but the most important
thing on the outside is probably the speakers because without the speakers
you wouldn't be able to hear anything. That is how a radio works.
My life without the radio wouldn't be very exciting because all I'd do is
play games, do homework and watch TV etc. Without the radio what would we
do when we're sick of everything else? It is very hard to get sick of the
radio unless you get a headache or something. Another thing is that you'd
have to wait until the news came on the TV or until you got the newspaper
to see what is happening in the world. It would also cut out some jobs that
you could have. A couple are a DJ, a singer and as a news radio reporter.
If there was no radio, what would help you relax at night or during the
day when you can't or don't watch TV? If you have older to younger brothers
or sisters you wouldn't be able to annoy them turning your radio up really
loud. At sleep-overs or birthday parties what would you do other than watch
TV? Living without the radio would be hard for some people because if they
missed a football or baseball game, they wouldn't be able to find out what
the score was. That is what my life would be like without the radio.

DEREK MARSDEN
My life without a radio would be awful. I would not know what to do.
A radio can be miniature or big. They usually look like a box. They
all have an antenna that picks up the radio waves in the air so that you
can hear the music... Radios can be silver, brown, or black. They sometimes
have a tape player, a record player, a track player, and a C.D. player.
Every radio has a knob for volume and tuning control.
The radio has an electric cord that is hooked up to the back of the radio
and on the other side. It is plugged into an electric outlet. Then you
are ready to turn it on. Each radio has a tuning knob that you turn to
get the station that you want. Then you have the antenna that picks up
the radio waves in the air so you can listen to the shows and music. The
radio gets the radio waves from the radio station where they are sent out.
People are in the stations talking and playing music into a microphone.
My life without a radio would not be great. Radios can be very important.
If I lived on a farm, and I did not have a radio, I might not know if dangers
were near. And what would I do in my car if I didn't have a happy tune
to listen to? And if I didn't have a radio I would not be able to hear
any music unless I went to a live concert. I can't imagine life without
a radio.
MY LIFE WITHOUT
By
SILVANA ORTIZ
If there wasn't any medicine in the world probably everyone in the world
would be sick. You might think that medicine is disgusting, but it really
does make you feel better. You might think medicine doesn't help you, but
it does!
Medicine is the science and art of healing. Medicine is science because
it is based on knowledge. It is an art because it depends on how skillfully
doctors and other medical workers apply this knowledge with patients. Medicine
can heal any kind , well, ALMOST any kind of diseases. Medicine can be
big or small, it can be any flavor, like grape, cherry, and bubble gum.
Medicine can be used for a fever too!
Medicine has helped alot of people in the world. There are many different
kinds of medicines in the world. Medicine can be used for a cold, a headache,
a fever and many other sicknesses. Some diseases can't be healed, but doctors
try their very best to find cures for the diseases like AIDS.
My life without medicine would be a disaster! My whole family would be
sick without medicine, and I'm sorry to say but alot of people would die
without medicine, even people who are strong eventually will die, and there
won't be any people in the world! If you were sick when you were a baby,
and there wasn't any medicine in the world, where would you be now? If
there wasn't any medicine in the world doctors wouldn't know what to do.
Even dentist's need medicine for your teeth. And so if there wasn't any
medicine in the world your teeth would be rotten. And that's why you should
be thankful for medicine!
ONCE THERE WAS AN ELEPHANT
by
PAUL CUDMORE
Once there was an elephant. His name was Harry. He lived in the jungle.
Harry loved rivers because he could swim very well. Harry loved sports.
Harry's favorite sport was baseball. Harry's favorite position was second
place. He liked second base because his friend quackers was the shortstop.
Harry's best friend was Quacker.

Meet PAUL CUDMORE
Paul Cudmore is an eight year old second grade student at the Goodyear School.
He plays baseball. He likes baseball. He likes to draw and to write stories.
CAN YOU WRITE A CLEAR SET OF DIRECTIONS?
The first grade students at the Goodyear School can!
Here is a sample written by ARIELLE BLACK, BOBBY, MAURA, and MATTHEW CHAMBERLAIN,
students in Mrs. Ulloa's first grade.
HOW DO YOU MAKE A JACK-O-LANTERN?
First, I have to pick out a pumpkin.
Next, I have to think of a face.
Then, I have to cut off the top and scoop out the seeds.
Finally, I carve the face and put a candle inside
DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE HOLIDAY?
Here's how the students in Mrs. Malagodi's second grade class answered that
question using poetry.
THANKSGIVING
by
Melissa Weigand
Thanksgiving is a special day for me.
It was a dream come true you see.
My parents were so very glad.
As my very first breath I had.
The respirator was no more needed.
My parents' prayers had been heeded.

NEEDING A POOL
by
David
10 Orange Street
Woburn, MA 01801
January 15, 1998
Dear Dad,
Now that we have a new house I think we should get a pool. In the summer
when it i hot, we can go in the pool. It will keep us cool. All of the kids
will be good swimmers. The whole family will have fun in the pool. We will
learn how to dive and then we will have a diving competition. It will keep
us out of your hair. We will have company over on a hot day. We won't have
to pack up for the beach. We can swim all day long and all night.
I know that a pool is expensive, but Dad, it is worth it!
Your son,
David
NEEDING A LAP TOP
by
Shawn Doherty
10 Orange Street
Woburn, MA 01801
January 15, 1998
Dear Dr. Nolan,
I think all of the childrn in grade four, Miss Foley's class, should have
a lap top.
Lap tops are fun. You can talk to your friends over it and you can go on
AOL. My favorite web site os Legoland. Most of AOL is educational. AOL is
a great opportunity for doing research. It is quicker to find the information.
We could save money to help pay for AOL.
Thank you, Dr. Nolan. I hope you will think about lap tops for my class.
Sincerely,
Shawn Doherty
NEEDING A DOG
by
Steven
10 Orange Street
Woburn, MA 01801
January 15, 1998
Dear Mom and Dad,
I really, really think you should buy me a dog.
I want a dog because we wouldn't get robbed as easily. I would help buy
him with my allowance. I'll clean up after him, take him for walks, and
feed him. A dog would be good company for the whole family. I know you'll
get to love a dog when you get the chance.
I know you already said no, but please think about it again.
Your son,
Steven
NEEDING A PEN PAL
by
Gauravi
10 Orange Street
Woburn, MA 01801
January 15, 1998
Dear Mr. Naik,
I really think that your school in India should be pen pals with my class
in Woburn.
My class would really like to understand Indian culture. I would really
like to undertand the Indian Curriculum. It would be interesting to see
if Indian children and American children are learning the same thing. Writing
letters back and forth would be good practice. The gym teacher would like
to know Indian sports so she could try different sports in the gym.
Please think about this and tell me if it is a good idea.
Sincerely,
Gauravi
NEEDING LAP TOP COMPUTERS
by
Julia Schechter
10 Orange Street
Woburn, MA 01801
January 15, 1998
Dear Dr. Nolan,
Please obtain lap top computers for every student in the fourth grade at
the Goodyear School.
We could learn by playing educational gaes. The computer would correct our
spelling errors. Students could send e-mail to each other and the room would
be very quiet. We could do our homework on the computer. Our hands would
not get tired so easily and we would enjoy writing more on the computer.
I hope you will think about this idea.
Sincerely,
Julia Schechter
NEEDING A SCHOOL SWIMMING POOL
by
Katie Skinner
10 Orange Street
Woburn, MA 01801
January 15, 1998
Dear Mr. Callahan,
I think it is time for a swimming pool for the kids. You should make the
gym bigger to make room.
I think you should have the pool because the kids will get good exercise.
It will be fun for us to have. We would play lots of fun games like Marco
Polo and other games. They could have swimming lessons for kids to learn
how to wim. It is important that kids know how to swim. It could save their
lives. A pool will be a big help because it will cool kids off. During the
summer when school is closed, you could keep the pool opened. We could charge
people to come to the pool. You could use the money for school supplies.
I hope you will consider this.
Sincerely,
Katie Skinner
NEEDING A VISIT TO FLORIDA
by
Ashley
10 Orange Street
Woburn, MA 01801
January 15, 1998
Dear Katelyn,
I really want you to visit Florida. Try to convince your parents to come.
Florida is a fun place. Florida is nice and hot. I can visit you at the
hotel. There are lots of great things here. You can go to awesome parks
or just have fun at the beaches. I know you will love Florida once you come.
Your friend,
Ashley
NEEDING THE PERFECT BIG PRESENT
by
Jonathan
10 Orange Street
Woburn, MA 01801
December 15, 1997
Dear Mom,
I know that you're planning on getting me a big present for Christmas. Instead
of a brand new game for Sega, why don't you get me a bike?
I have a lot of reasons why I should get a bike. Here's some of them. My
old bike is beat up and the chain is all rusty. The new Huffy I really want
doesn't cost a lot. I'll get more exercise with easier pedals. My old bike
is way too small! I can't even sit on it. Finally, the bike is so rusty
you can't even steer it. I could fall and hurt myself because of the rust.
I hope you will think about getting me this new bike.
Your son,
Jonathan
NEEDING A WALKWAY
by
Ashley Doherty
10 Orange Street
Woburn, MA 01801
January 15, 1998
Dear Mayor Dever,
I really think that you should put a walkway over the street at the corner
of Lentini's and Pete's by the Goodyear School.
You should put this in because there are too many people getting hit by
cars. It's a good idea and even though it's expensive lives are more important.
People would get across the street much faster because they won't have to
wait for the crosswalking person or wait for the light to change. Many children
walk here on their way to Leland Park.
I really think we need this very much and I hope you will think seriously
about this.
Sincerely,
Ashley Doherty
NEEDING TO GO ON A WHALE WATCH
by
Katelyn Landry
10 Orange Street
Woburn, MA 01801
January 15, 1998
Dear Miss Foley,
I really think you should take the class on a whale watch.
Some children have never seen a whale and it would be fun. Whales are beautiful
animals and it would be awesome to see one up close. It would be nice to
take a boat ride and see other boats. Maybe we will see different kinds
of whales. The class will learn a lot if we go on this trip. Maybe we can
have a bake sale to raise the money.
I'm sure you will think about this trip.
Sincerely,
Katelyn Landry

FAVORITE CHARTACTER: My favorite character was Billy because he was the
one to eat the fifteen worms!!
OPINION: I thought HOW TO EAT FRIED WORMS was a very interesting book.
PLOT: The beginning of the story started with Alan and Billy making a bet
that if Billy could eat fifteen worms in fifteen days, Alan would give Billy
fifty dollars. Billy started to eat the first couple of worms and found
out that he liked them. After Billy ate 12 worms Alan and Joe were starting
to get nervous because they did not have the fifty dollars. Alan and Joe
tried to trick Billy so that he would forget about the worms. They glued
two worms together and they brought him to the Mets game and stuffed him
with all kinds of food, but none of the tricks worked. Finally they pushed
him into a tool closet and locked it. Mrs. Forrester (the mother) caught
them trying to cheat so they let Billy out. Billy ate the last worm. He
won!!!. He bought a minibike with the fifty dollars.

TITLE: DEAR MR. HENSHAW
AUTHOR: Beverly Cleary
PUBLISHER: Avon/Camelot
MAIN CHARACTERS: Leigh, Mr. Henshaw, Bill, Bonnie, Bandit
FAVORITE CHARACTER: My favorite character was Leigh because he was smart
and caring.
OPINION: I think the book was sad because Leigh's parents were divorced,
and sort of exciting because you never knew what was going to happen next.
PLOT: Leigh Botts was a boy who liked to read. He often wrote to an author
named Mr. Boyd Henshaw. Lee (Lee) read stories such as "Ways to Amuse
a Dog", and "Moose on Toast".
Leigh wass somewhat funny and expressive in his letters. Mr. Henshaw wrote
back to Leigh every time.
Leigh's mom worked at a food store by the name of "Catering by Katy".
His food was often stolen by a kid in Leigh's school. Leigh made a burgular
alarm for his lunch box, then his lunch was safe!
Mr. Henshaw encouraged Leigh to write in a diary or journal. Leigh did and
he wrote to "Mr. Pretend Henhaw".
Near the end of the book I found out that his parents were divorced. His
dad lost Leigh's dog, Bandit, but found him again. Leigh's father visited
Leigh's house and asked Leigh's mother if they could get married again.
She said, "No." and the father left the house with Bandit and
drove off.
As you can find out Leigh was sad throughout the story. He was asked to
write a story for "Young Writers" Yearbook". He wrote a story
about "A Day on Dad's Rig". It won third prize and Leigh got to
have lunch with Mrs. Badger. She was another famous author. Leigh had fun
at lunch with her.

ANALYZING A CHARACTER'S PERSONALITY
RAMOS
by
Matthew Rose
The person I wrote about is Ramos from a story called "Hurdle".
This story was written by Mary Blocksman and Esther Romero.
Ramos is a nice kid but sometimes he can be very competitive. He is good
at computers. He is very athletic. He is a really, really good swimmer.
Ramos is a helpful kid. He has lots of friends and he is a great trainer.
He is also smart and strong. He is a very good friend. He is really cool.
Ramos was very strict and forceful when he was training Vincente. He yelled
at Vincente and told him he would be sorry if he did not show up. Even though
Ramos was a very good athlete, he was a poor skater.
I thought Ramos was a very good friend. He didn't have many unfavorable
qualities. He's cool! That's why I want to be his friend.
MOTHER
by
Lauren Sartoris
I read the story "Are Your Arms A Hundred Years Old". I will write
about the mother in the story. Her job was to take care of Aunt Dew. Michael's
mother was caring. She saw to it that Aunt Dew always had a nap, so she
would not get too tired. Mother was thoughtful, too. Occassionally she would
open the window so Aunt Dew could have fresh air. Mother would get very
concerned. If Aunt Dew fell asleep in the chair she would fall out. Aunt
Dew fell out of the chair before and got hurt. Mother was alo responsible.
Since Aunt Dew came to live with Michael's family, mother was responsible
for feeding her and doing many things for Aunt Dew since she was so old.
Every day mother combed and braided Aunt Dew's hair.
I, also, think mother was mean in a way because Aunt Dew was crying and
mother didn't care. Mother is demanding because she was always yelling at
Michael to leave Aunt Dew alone. Not only that, mother was unsympathetic.
Mother didn't feel sorry for Aunt Dew at all.
I think mother wasn't as kind as she should have been to Aunt Dew. I didn't
like her as a character. I did like the story though.
ERNIE
by
Matthew
I will tell you a story about Ernie, a boy in the story "Ernie and
the Mile Long Muffler".
Ernie was a very quick learner because when his Uncle Simon taught him how
to knit, he knew in a snap! Ernie was very friendly, too. At school he had
a lot of friends. Ernie was very nice in school because he taught the class
how to knit. He was very helpful in the classrom and to his classmates.
He was a good friend because when someone did something to him he did not
tell. He was independent because he was not scared to knit. He had a fair
to get money for the hospital. Ernie was sensible because he knew he was
not going to make a mile long muffler.
Ernie was miserable when he had the chicken pox. He did not do anything.
He was unhappy because everyone made fun of him. He was bored because he
did not watch television.
I liked this story. Ernie was a good friend because he didn't tell on his
friends. I would like to have a friend like Ernie.
VINCENTE
by
Peter Garchinsky
I read the story "Hurdles". I selected Vincente to write about.
I selected him because he is a computer whiz.
Vincente was a computer whiz. All of the kids in the fourth grade admired
him because he was good at computers. He was smart in school. When the fourth
graders were having a triathalon, Vincente had to work hard. He never gave
up when he was learning to skate. He was a good swimmer, so that made him
feel good. He soon became a team player. When he was practicing everyday,
he was a friend to everyone. On the day of the triathalon, Vincente was
very excited. Everyone was calling his name and cheering for him. He was
proud to be a member of his class.
At the beginning of the story Vincente was a cheater at the computers. He
fixed it so he could always win. He didn't believe in himself or that he
could win the triathalon. He wasn't good at sports until Ramos taught him.
He was nervous and afraid to jump the hurdles. He felt scared and embarrassed
when he fell.
I liked the story "hurdles" because it was interesting.
RICHARD
by
Tom Gerety
I read "Ernie and the Mile Long Muffler. It was a great story. I am
writing about Richard, one of Ernie's classmates.
Richard liked to pretend to be funny because he wanted to be cool. At the
end of the story, Richard started to cooperate in class. He learned to knit
like the other boys to help Ernie.
I think that Richard was mean because he got up on the wrong foot. Richard
was always mean and picked on Ernie. Richard wasted a lot of money. He threw
the yarn into a mud puddle. He was unhelpful because he didn't help Ernie
knit. Richard was not a good friend because he did not like Ernie. Richard
liked to tease Ernie because he thought it was fun.
At first, I didn't think I would like Richard as a friend. He was mean to
Ernie. By the end of the story, I changed my mind.
MICHAEL
by
Sarah Doucette
I read "Are Your Ars a Hundred Years Old?" by Shawn Bell Mathis.
I wrote about Michael because I liked how he was determined.
Michael was most thoughtful and caring because he spent a lot of time entertaining
Aunt Dew. He felt sorry for her because she was so old and spent most of
the day in her room. I liked Michael because he was nice and played games
with Aunt Dew. Michael was helpful because he entertained Aunt Dew and his
mother could do her housework. Michael knew how the hundred pennies box
was important to Aunt Dew so he was determined to hide it so no one could
take it away from Aunt Dew. Michael was playful when it came time to play
the name game. Aunt Dew had a great friend in Michael. Michael was responsible
when it came to helping Aunt Dew.
I think Michael was a lonely boy. He had no kids his own age to play with.
He must have been bored. I think Michael was sad when his mother put Aunt
Dew to bed. He knew the game was over for the day.
I enjoyed "Are Your Arms a Hundred Years Old?" I also learned
to keep on trying.
