The Woburn Public Schools mourn the death of Dean Oulton.
Mr. Oulton served for many years as a dedicated substitute throughout

MATT FOLEY, REEVES THIRD GRADER, NAMES THE NATIVE
AMERICAN AT HORN POND
WINTHOOLOO
THE WOBURN ADVOCATE, under the direction of columnist
Rick Friedman, sponsored a contest for Woburn's third graders.
He asked them to name the Native American statue that overlooks
Horn Pond. Two hundred seventy-nine of the third graders responded
to the contest. Matt Foley, a third grade student in Mrs. Grant's
class at the Reeves School, was the winner!!
Congratuations Matt!!
Matt wrote
WINITHOOLOO
One day long ago two Native Americans, one named Winithooloo and
the other
names Nansema, met. Winithooloo said he had visions of a swan.
That the swan would
come was predicted by a god. But, Nansema did not believe him.
Then the next day he had the vision again. Still Nansema did not
believe. But the
third time the vision said, I will show the non-believer.
Winithooloo and Nansema went up Mt. Mianomo. Nansemas shoes
wore out.
She tripped and fell off the mountain!
Out of the sky came a swan and Nansema fell on it. It was huge,
but even the size
didnt matter. The swan was as light as a cloud and the swan
was protected by a god.
So the swan wouldnt drown, the god made land in the middle
of the pond. Here
the swan placed Nansema.

THIRD GRADE STUDENTS -- HAVE YOU SENT IN YOUR ENTRY???
THIRD GRADE STUDENTS INVITED TO NAME NEW NATIVE AMERICAN
STATUE AT HORN POND
All third grade students are invited to submit a name
for the new Native American statue. Children should do research
on Native Americans that lived in this area and select an appropriate
name. Each child should submit the chosen name and the reason
he/she thinks the name is appropriate. Students should write their
name, school, and teacher's name on the back of the 8.5"
x 11" entry.
All teachers and principals have a picture of the sculpture
and a set of rules.
Entries are due in Dr. Nolan's office by 4 P.M. on
September 24th. A ceremony to formally name the Native American
will be held on October 3rd.
For information about Native Americans in Woburn please
see Rick Friedman's column in THE WOBURN ADVOCATE, September 16th
edition.
