MacLochlainn of
Tirconnell DNA
So far we have 24 McLaughlin samples that match the Ui Neill or NW Irish modal and 9 non-matching samples. Some are 12 marker tests, some 25 marker tests and some are 37 marker tests. We took the 37 marker samples and ran them through the Network phylogenic program with some interesting results. The samples used are listed below.

But even before looking at the phylogenic results we can already see the McLaughlin modal differs in several places from the overall NW Irish or Ui Neill modal. DYS 458 = 18 DYS 447 = 24 DYS 576 = 17 Out of thirteen 37 marker samples, seven have the above pattern. Another two have DYS458 = 17 but match the last two markers (DYS 447, 576). The other four samples have none of these deviations from the Ui Neill modal.
The phylogenic charts have grouped in one large cluster all of the 37 marker samples containing either 18 or 17 at DYS 458; 24 at DYS 447 and 17 at DYS 576. The remaining four 37 markers samples are quite a genetic distance away and seemingly unrelated to each other as well. Of the 9 samples grouped together on the left all sharing the same DNA markers which deviate from the Ui Neill modal, two have verified origins in Donegal. A third sample, not included in the chart because it is only 25 markers, also matches at DYS 458 = 18 and DYS 447 = 24. This sample also has verified origins in Donegal and came from the Sorenson Database. With 3 of the 10 samples matching this genetic pattern having verified origins in Donegal, we believe we are looking at the genetic signature of the MacLochlainn of Tirconnell sept in Ireland. The other non-matching samples would appear to be genetically too distant to be related to this group, all of whom match to within 5 mismatches of 37.

Genetic distance tables seem to confirm the robustness of the cluster of matching McLaughlins. Just to take one example, 9F7N8 with verified origins in Donegal matches 4 in the "Donegal" group at a genetic distance of 3; one at a genetic distance of 2; two at a genetic distance of 4; and one at a genetic distance of 5. All of these are rated as related, probably related, or possibly related in the charts. The other 4 non-matching McLaughlins are between a genetic distance of 8-11 at 37 markers, clearly not closely related. We appear then to be looking at several groups of McLaughlins in these 37 markers samples; one large group or cluster probably descended from the MacLochlainn sept of Donegal. There may be as many as three other unrelated McLaughlin groups represented in these 37 marker samples. One of these (KPX4T) appears to have a solid paper trail of Ulster in the late 7th century and an origin in Scotland prior to that. Several of the "Donegal" cluster McLaughlins thought their ancestors came from Scotland and not Ireland. YX39S on Ysearch has an ancestor living in Scotland ca. 1800 but with a census record which states born in Ireland. The McGlothlin sample (Q7KMX on Ysearch) thought his ancestors also came from Scotland but lacks any real documentation. Neither of these have any known connection to Argyll, Scotland, the homeland of the Maclachlan of Scotland clan.
