This Just In!

News from the front lines:
  • Martin joined moe.
    at
The Fillmore on Saturday, October 15 for an absolutely blistering show . . . Meester fans on the LOM-Announce list were hip to the tip and showed their support in force!
  • Look for another Meester interview on www.roadieradio.com , this time Big Steve Parrish caught the Meester backstage at the 8/25 Shoreline Further Festival, where he chatted with Bruce Hornsby some Other Ones.
  • Martin has become quite the regular performer at the Musicians for Medical Marijuana benefits, ever since LOM played their first benefit last May. In June, the Meester played in the all-star band with Greg Anton, David Nelson, Barry Sless, Bill Laymon, Harvey Mandel and more. In August, he shared the stage with former Zero bandmates Steve Kimock, Bobby Vega, Banana and Pete Sears, plus drummers Alan Hertz and John Molo. That benefit was webcast by uber-roadie Steve Parrish; an archive is available at Steve's site, www.roadieradio.com. October's event was a blast too . . . stay tuned for another one in December!
  • Speaking of online audio streams, make sure to catch the Bad Santa Show on EyeQRadio , where Art, the "Bad Santa" himself, spins heavy doses of LOM, MFQ, Zero, and other Meester-related music in his Bay Area jam music show. The Bad Santa Show "airs" on Thursdays.
  • LOM recently spent a few days at the historic Plant studio in Sausalito, CA, recording tracks for a new CD with our good friend, legendary producer/engineer Arne Frager. It was a great session . . . stay tuned for the release!
  • Who's that sitting in with Legion of Mary this time? In the past few months, we've had the honor of hosting Merl Saunders, Zigaboo Modeliste (The Meters), Barry Sless (David Nelson Band, Kingfish), Jim Loughlin (moe.), Alan Hertz (KVHW), and our friends in the Faraway Brothers: Eric McFadden (Liar, Eric McFadden Experience), Chip Roland (Zero) & Ed Ivey.
  • Martin covered a lot of ground in the past year, sitting in with jamband stalwarts the Allman Brothers, The David Nelson Band & Phil Lesh, Merl Saunders, Max Creek, Leftover Salmon, the Steve Kimock Band, and his old compadres, Zero. The Meester has also been spotted joining sets with rising stars like the Derek Trucks Band, the Living Daylights, Psydecar, Red I, the Maykers, Dexter Grove and KVHW. He's been seen gettin' funky with New Orleans slide demon John Mooney and funk drummer #1, Zigaboo Modeliste.
  • Don't forget Martin's other project, the Martin Fierro Quartet+, an exploratory jazz group that never has a four members (hence the "Quartet +") . The Meester has invited quite a few hot guests to his intimate Sunday MFQ+ shows -- Matt Eakle (David Grisman Quintet), Terry Haggerty (Sons of Champlin), Alan Hertz (Garaj Mahal, KVHW), Chip Roland (Zero), Kevin Hayes (Robert Cray Band) and many more!

  • Here's what Relix Magazine had to say about Legion of Mary:
  • "In 1974, Legion of Mary was most likely the only real acid-jazz group."
  • "He [Ray Scott] is one of the few musicians around who can honestly finger pick a Doc Watson tune, grab the Albert King blues feel, run swing changes like Charlie Christian, strum a simple folk ballad, or slide like Elmore James, yet make it sound uniquely Ray Scott."
  • "He [Alex Baum] is also well-known for his great command of many different musical styles and awesome mastery of the bass."
  • "The future is looming large."

  • About Legion Of Mary

Today’s Legion of Mary continues to mine the funky, fertile musical landscape first traversed by those musical pioneers of a quarter century ago.

Martin Fierro felt it was necessary to bring back that spirit and joy that was experienced by all "back in the day." Assembling a band of like-minded and experienced musicians in 1998, this version of the Legion of Mary has been rapidly creating quite an underground stir again. This time, the fans are a much wider group of folks. You’ll see old-time Deadheads, young jam-band fans, and folks that just want to shake their booty to a funky, groovy, soulful mix of good-time music with a touch of jazz and sense of adventure.

Given the deep musical roots, and relationships forged over the years, Legion of Mary is likely to entice a wide array of guests to join them onstage. In Arkansas, Earl Cate, from the legendary Cate Brothers band, sat in for some musical fireworks. While sharing the bill with Little Feat in San Francisco’s Maritime Hall, fellow Garcia collaborator Howard Wales (Hooteroll?) dropped by, as did some of Martin’s old buddies from Zero. On the Allman Brothers Band's "Dont Trust Any Band Under 30" Tour last year, Martin was asked to sit in on their Bay Area shows at Shoreline and Concord. On any given night, you’ll never know who’ll pop up to add to the fun!

So, once again, Legion of Mary arises to keep the musical legacy alive, and take it to new heights. Truly "a band from the past with music for the future."
