"Philosophy is written in this grand book-I mean the universe. [It] is written in the language of mathematics, and its characters are triangles, circles, and other geometric figures, without which it is humanly impossible to understand a single word of it."
--Galileo Galilei

The Pythagoreans believed that numbers are responsible for everything in the universe from planetary motion to musical harmony. Although the Greeks firmly believed in the study of natural numbers and their ratios (and were passionately against the notion of infinity) the philosophy of mathematics as the means of understanding nature is still relevant 2400 years later. This website presents three numbers whose mystical qualities appear in everything from area formulas to logarithms to sunflowers. All three are irrational and their digits are completely random, yet they describe some of the world's most beautiful patterns.
