St. Michael the Archangel Maronite Church
St. George's first service at St. Michael's
What is St. George's?
Saint George's is the result of the efforts of a group of concerned, committed lay people. Deeply troubled by the drift from traditional orthodoxy of the Episcopal Church at both the national and local level they were seeking a way to remain authentically Anglican. After much prayer and study the group approached Bishop Mark Haverland of the Diocese of the South of the Anglican Catholic Church about the possibility of founding a parish in Fayetteville. The result of that meeting was the founding of St. George's Anglican Church. The first services were held on July 13, 2003 at 8:00 a.m. in the F.I.L.I. Building. Services are now being held at 8: 30 a.m. at Saint Michael the Archangel Maronite Catholic Church at 806 Arsenal Avenue, Fayetteville.

What is the Anglican Catholic Church?
The Anglican Catholic Church is a body which was the result of a gathering in Saint Louis in 1976 of several thousand clergy and laity of the Episcopal Church concerned about what appeared to them to be the repudiation of the basic principles of Anglicanism by the General Convention of the Episcopal Church in Minneapolis in 1976. They felt that the imposition of a new prayer book and the ordination of women violated not only the constitutional provisions of the Episcopal Church but substituted the legislative authority of General Convention for the traditional Anglican authority of Scripture, reason, and tradition. They saw the Episcopal Church embarking upon a course which would only lead to further deviation from the norms of traditional Christianity. With deep regret they set about organizing a church that would allow them to practice the Christian faith as traditionally taught in Anglicanism. The road has not always been easy, yet almost thirty years later traditional Anglicanism as represented by the Anglican Catholic Church has an established presence in the North and South America, Australia, India, and Africa.

What is the Diocese of the South?
The Diocese of the South is one of the 13 dioceses which make up the Original Province of the ACC. India comprises the second province. In Anglican practice dioceses are regional divisions and provinces are national divisions.

Do you have “real” bishops, priests, and deacons?
The original bishops of the church received their consecration in 1978 from Albert Chambers, the Episcopal Bishop of Springfield thus ensuring that they possess authentic Anglican Apostolic succession. The succession has been transmitted to all succeeding bishops, priests, and deacons.

What sort of a service can I expect?
The Book of Common Prayer 1928 is the standard for all services. If you are from an Episcopal background it will seem relatively familiar to you. If you are from another background, you will be pleasantly surprised by its extensive use of Scripture. St. George's uses a service leaflet which contains the entire service from start to finish, thus eliminating the need to shuffle back and forth within a book.

Who are your clergy?
St. George's is served by the Rev. Scott E. McCleary. Father McCleary resides in Eastover. He has a B.A. from Rocky Mountain College, an M.Div. from Bexley Hall, Rochester, New York, and is a Ph.D. Candidate in Church History at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. Father McCleary was ordained in 1993 and has served parishes in Maryland, Virginia, and New Hampshire. He also has extensive experience as a hospital and hospice chaplain. In addition to serving St. George's Father McCleary also teaches part time  at Methodist College. Prior to coming to St. George's he was priest in charge at Saint Benedict's, Chapel Hill.
