COMMENTS: Hi, remember me? I'm the guy who gave you the trueSpace "Brilliancy Mapping" tip a few years back. Well, after the whole AOL screw up, I quit 'em, and joined another ISP. I always wondered how to find your page again and, tonight, I finally did. Well, after a brief stint with a copy (ok, ok, a pirated copy) of 3DS Max, I bought LightWave 3D. I've only had it a few months, but I really like it. The particle animation plugin is incredible. I just needed something that offered some more high-end features than trueSpace does... Particle animation, volumetrics, IK (before TS3) and a faster and better renderer. I got all of them, along with a few quirks, but on the whole, I really like it. Anyway, your site's great. Love some of your images in the gallery. -Chris

I especially liked the suggestion to watch old black & white movies; the Hitchcock and "Film Noir" classics are wonderful examples of lighting technique. I am amazed by the number of film-goers who are disappointed by the use of black & white in film; sometimes to the extent that they won't even watch an old movie that hasn't been "colorized". ( It should arrive in two days via mail order). I have an extensive background in programming and 3D rendering always seemed as if it could be fun to play with. COMMENTS: I won't pass judgement yet as I'm not qualified to do so. I recently got sucked into the apparently bottomless vortex of 3D computer graphics by the siren's song of Bryce 2 and now am ready to make the plunge into further dependency and object modelling with trueSpace. TS 2 is in Santa's bag right now and I have this sneaking suspicion I may use it as a pretext to upgrade to TS 3, even though I am a relative- heck, who am I kidding, a virtual- newbie in the 3D graphics arena. So I'll be using your tips to help get under way here on my PC when I should be out enjoying the Long Island Sound outside my window. Hmmm, guess I could go out to find objects to model and scenes to compose... This pastime definitely affects the way you look at the world, though, doesn't it? I've had a hell of a time with glass... I wonder if you could give me a pointer on two problems I have run across when making .avi's: Problem #1: Sometimes, the first frame of an .avi is very badly aliased (blurry). As soon as the movie starts to play, the very next frame is fine. Do you know of this, and how to avoid it? Problem #2: I made an 83MB (yes, MB) .avi. When I play it, the movie comes out all jerky from skipped frames. This is at any size playing screen. For info (always tell the doctor everything) I am using a 200 MHz RePentium with 130MB RAM and win95. Do you know of any fix for this doggone expensive .avi? It took me TEN DAYS to render it... Walt

I especially liked the part and thought it to be true when you said "The problem with 3D modelled objects is that their edges are too perfect, too sharp, too straight. If edges and corners were really that sharp I'd be taking my two year old to the E.R. more often." I have a 3 year old and still think that to be true. Thanks for your tips. ALso spent a year in CCU as a CV Tech and Code Team / Bedside Cath Team prior to going to PD. My dad is a Internal Medicine Doc (still in practice @ 70) & brother is Psychatrist. Any way you image of medicine struck me as I could not tolerate the medical teaching environment and rejected a slot in Surgeons Assistant School after watching too many needless incidents and false hopes given to families while interns & residents "practiced" their trade. COMMENTS: This is a brilliant webpage. Thanks a million for the tips, you're a life saver. Intro : I am from Singapore who purchased a copy of TS3 recently. I have a slight problem, I cannot do print outs of nice resolution because TS3 apparently only allows up to 72 pixels/inch after I rendered them to Photoshop4. To obtain sharp images and details we must have at least 100 pixels/inch. As I am doing this for a major deal and time is running out, please advise as soon as possible. I have tried increasing the resolution in PhotoShop4, but it only degrades the quality. Thanks. F.Desmond

My only suggestion is in regards to "truespace" in your opening paragraph on the home page. I feel that it is too colorful for the rest of the paragraph. I understand that it is an effective way of creating emphasis, but it appears in three different places is one paragraph, jolting the eye everywhere. I think that if you changed the color of the regular text to the same soft yellow on this page, that they would coordinate much better than having bold color next to dull grey. chris

COMMENTS: Another tS lighting tip for your readers. Do not overlight space scenes! Too much light makes them look cartoonish! Remember, space is DARK! Space scenes can be lit with one or two DISTANT type lights. Make the dominant one cast ray-traces shadows with a value between .8 to 1. Orient it at an angle to your objects. Make the second non snadow-casting with a value of about .25. Orient it in opposition to the major light. Does this work? Stop by my homepage and see for yourself.

COMMENTS: I've had your page URL stored in my bookmark file for quite some time. Every so often I take time to peek at those pages once more and see how the owners progress. I've been dabbling in the Truespace style of 3D imagery maybe 7-8 months with far less talent than I see here. You images are definitely worth the time to enjoy them. I love the textures in general, you use good ones and use them well, but you outdid yourself with the rowboat. I seem to recall a series of pictures like this from the LA Art Expo (which I try to visit annually to admire what I can't afford). Some Eastern Block artist, whose stuff caught my eye as soon as it came out (Yugolavia, perhaps) did this exact style of painting. Wonderful stuff. If you recreated his painting in Truespace, you did him proud. I would like to share one thing with you, not knowing how well you are tuned into the events around TS. There is a new and very inexpensive landscape plugin available from this URL. http://members.aol.com/VVVVVai/image.htm The product is called Bitmap Genesis and deserves a look. (I just ordered mine, but I also own Bryce2) Lastly, just a comment, because you put your feeling in this matter on the wire. We have great knowledge of great things, because we use the tools that have been made available. Whether we use Hubble to scan the universe, or to use the various non-intrusive methods for analysis and early detection detection antenatal problems amounts to the same thing. Your life in in the hands of the airborne and groud based radar systems every time you fly on an airliner. We live in a world where the range of our senses has been greatly expanded to enhance our chances of survival. In your case, you see this clearly, I am sure, where patients are concerned who rely on your use of such technology for their benefit. In this case you are just a little too personally involved and question the wisdom of the methods used to assure your son's optimal chances to get into this complex life in the best condition possible. Sorry, I rambled. I have a hard time expressing my thoughts in a little window that keeps slipping away. I hope that you understand what I mean to say. COMMENTS: Some really good points here! They've just given tS 1.04 away on the front of a magazine here in the UK and I'm looking for guidance - hence the visit. I've used POVray in the past and I'm having real difficulty getting my head round some of the 'ways of working' of tS. I'm trying to model the new bathroom we've just had installed (something I did very easily in POV) but I can't figure out how to get a realistic looking bath or sink. I've tried starting with a cube, dividing a face and then creating the hole in the middle (nothing like realistic) Boolean's only seem to work with regular polygons so no nice rounded corners :-( I'm obviously missing something really fundamental with the way tS does things but I can't find the information I'm after. Everyone has galleries of superb complex shapes but no indication on how to even put an arched door of a specific dimension through a wall of a given size!!! Back to the surfing I guess!

COMMENTS: Hello Jeffrey (Wally) , I've seen your work before, and your page is very good, commendable. I am a producer/director for the government at Ft Leavenworth and do a lot of digital everything (the content or matter), using Premiere, Photoshop, PSP, Cool Edit, Sawplus, Corel, Truespace, 3DStudioMAX, Painter, freeware etc... well you know, whatever happens to work out as a cool desktop tool. My time 3d wise has been spent with Truespace, mainly because I started there and the time needed to train up to MAX hasn't happened. I always tend to think first of Truespace solutions (most of my animations are flying bumpers, or virtual sets keyed in Premiere for broadcast video, so they are not super detailed or whatever). I have a question for you, just getting our TS4 upgrade last week, what do you think of it, and do you find it to be a processing hog? I, at this point feel somewhat disappointed, (I thought 3.2 was an improvement, 4.0 is really slow ). I would appreciate your thoughts on this. And by the way, I really do admire your work. How do you do find the time to do the doctoring thing and digital art as well? Perhaps you could get into a practice with Dr. Tom of www.tomshardware.com fame. Thanks, Karl

One thing that I tried to do was to follow your tip #21. Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but in my animation I don't see a gradual change between texture maps. If I paint an object in frame 0 with texture A and the in last frame with texture B, all I get is texture A throught the enire animation, except for the very last frame (texture B). You don't need to apologize at all. Both the image (in the intellectual sense) and the expertise are yours, and they express something you found worthy. You say allegory, they say heresy, who cares! Just keep up the terrific work. I like the "PumpkinHead" a lot, and would be proud if I had done it myself - actually I'm envious that the symbol ocurred to you and not to me. Of course, I probably would have had a different motive for doing it, and they would have been yelling at me then (grin).
