....getting to and around the Nicoya Peninsula
- The Tempisque Ferry has been replaced by a toll bridge, cutting down the transit time to the Northwest areas of the Nicoya Peninsula from the Capital area.- For the Southern Nicoya Peninsula - in other words, Bahia Luminosa and the entire Gulf of Nicoya and Southwest side of the Nicoya Peninsula:
Two ferries serve between Puntarenas and Playa Naranjo. Two Vehicle ferries, the Peninsular and the Tambor and One persons-only ferry serve between Puntarenas and the Paquera Ferry Terminal, the preferred route when coming to Bahia Luminosa. Current schedules are for Vehicle ferries every two hours between early morning and evening hours. A number of Taxis serve the region north and south from the Paquera Terminal. No Taxis or Buses are available from Naranjo. Hotel & Resort Developement between Playa Naranjo and the southern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula has been more restrained than in the northwest portion of the Peninsula, this area retains much of its natural charm.
Bahia Luminosa is 14 Km North of that Paquera Terminal where the ferry from Puntarenas disembarks(turn right on paved road at town center of Paquera, head north for 20+ minutes). Entrance to Bahia Luminosa (and the Curu Nature Reserve, which is 45 minutes south of Bahia Luminosa) are adjacent to the main North/South Road on the Peninsula
The main road between Paquera and Naranjo has been regraded and is smooth in the dry season, passable with reduced speeds in the rainy months, usually late May until November.Check the internet-only, weekday edition of AM COSTA RICA www.amcostarica.com
