The scene: Catherine has been rescued after being left for dead in Central Park. Vincent has taken her to his chamber in the world below. She awakens.
V: "You're safe. You're safe now."
C: "Where am I?"
V: "No one will hurt you. You're safe here."
C: "Hospital?"
V: "No. But you're going to be all right."
C: "Why aren't I in a hospital?"
V: "There was no time. You were bleeding."
C: "What did they do? My eyes!"
V: "Your eyes were not hurt. We made sure. Rest now."
The scene: Later, Catherine awakens again.
C: "Who's here? Who are you?"
V: "Vincent."
C: "Vincent?"
V: "My father and I treated your injuries. You had broken ribs. You need to be still."
C: "Where am I?"
V: "Where no one can hurt you."
C: "My face hurts."
V: "Tell me your name."
C: "Catherine."
V: "Catherine. Try to rest. If you need anything, I'll be close by. Don't be afraid. Please don't be afraid."
C: "I'll try."
The scene: Vincent is feeding Catherine a meal of soup.
C: "Vincent. Tell me, where are we? Somewhere there's an elevated train. Brooklyn? Queens?"
V: "No, not Brooklyn or Queens."
C: "Am I still in New York? Vincent, please tell me. Where are we?"
V: "I have to keep it as a secret."
C: "Why?"
V: "Because a lot of good people depend on this place for safety."
C: "I'll keep your secret. And that tapping! It never stops!"
V: "It's people talking to each other--tapping on the master pipes."
C: "You mean...messages?"
V: "Mmhmm."
C: "Vincent, please tell me."
V: "We're below the city-- below the subways. There's a whole world of tunnels and chambers that most people don't know exists. There are no maps to where we are. It's a forgotten place. But, it's warm and it's safe and we have all the room we need. So we live here and we try to live as well as we can. And, we try to take care of each other. It's our city down here."
C: "What are you doing down here? Why are you here?"
V: "I was a baby...abandoned...left to die. Someone found me, brought me here to the man who became my father. He took me, he raised me, he taught me everything and he named me Vincent. That's where I was found--near the hospital, St. Vincent's."
C: "I don't know what to believe."
V: "It's all true."
The scene: Catherine has seen Vincent for the first time. She is very frightened by his appearance. Her reaction hurt him very deeply. He has returned to face her and to lead her home.
V: "I've never regretted what I am...until now."
C: "How? How did this happen to you?"
V: "I don't know how. I have ideas. I'll never know. I was born...and I survived. It's time for you to go back."
C: "Tell me it's a nightmare...that it didn't happen. It can't be."
V: "It's not a nightmare. It happened. And, you're alive. Catherine, you survived. And, what you endured will make you stronger...better."
C: "I don't have your strength. I don't know how to do it."
V: "You have the strength, Catherine. You do. I know you. It's time."
The scene: Eight months have passed since Catherine left Vincent's world to return home. Yet, Vincent is unable to forget her. He shares his agony with "Father."
F: "She can only bring you unhappiness."
V: "Then I'll be unhappy! But, I can't forget her. We're still connected. I can feel what she's feeling. I know what she's thinking--when she's frightened, when she's happy or sad."
F: "Vincent, your senses, your empathic powers are quite extraordinary. It's your gift. And, these powers have been heightened by the concern...the love that you feel. But don't let your act of kindness destroy you."
V: "Maybe I have no choice."
The scene: Father's advice goes unheeded as Vincent throws caution to the wind, his feelings for Catherine leading him to her. He comes to her balcony.
C: "Vincent?!"
V: "I didn't mean to frighten you. I'm sorry."
C: "No! I'm so glad to see you!"
V: "Your face..."
C: "They fixed it."
V: "Yes."
C: "Come inside."
V: "No. I have to go now."
C: "No! Not yet!"
V: "I should never have come here."
C: "Vincent! I'm glad you did. Come here. Sit down."
V: "I wanted to see you. There are so many things I wanted to tell you."
C: "I have so many things to tell you!"
V: "I know."
C: "I'm learning to be strong."
V: "I know. Catherine, I feel the things you're feeling when you do."
C: "How do you mean?"
V: "Just know that it's true. Know that your pain is my pain...sometimes almost as if we are one. I came here because I wanted to see that you were well...and because I wanted to see you one last time."
C: "I'll never see you again?"
V: "I've seen your world. There's no place for me in it. I know what I am. Your world is filled with frightened people and I remind them of what they are most afraid of."
C: "Their own ignorance."
V: "Their aloneness."
C: "Yes."
V: "So, now I have to begin to forget."
C: "Forget me?"
V: "No. I'll never forget you. But I must forget the dream of being a part of you. Find someone, Catherine, to be part of. Be happy. Goodbye."
C: "No, not yet! There's still time. It's still dark. Don't leave."
The scene: Vincent has just rescued Catherine from certain death by the men who had previously attacked her.
C: "I owe you everything! Everything!"
V: "You owe me nothing. I'm a part of you, Catherine, just as you are a part of me. Wherever you go, wherever I am, I'm with you. Goodbye."
C: "For now..."
The scene: After rescuing Catherine from Paracelsus, Vincent ferries Catherine across an underground river on their journey home. Vincent recalls Father's words.
V: "There is a truth beyond knowledge, beyond everything we could ever hope to know. And that truth is love."
The scene: Catherine is staying in the tunnels, grieving over the loss of her father. She and Vincent are at the falls.
C: "But it wasn't like a dream. He was there! Talking to me!"
V: "Giving you his blessing?"
C: "Yes! He understood about our secret. He understood...everything! I could feel his trust. Whatever I do now, it's okay."
V: "You found peace with him."
C: "Yes."
V: "But not yet with yourself."
C: "I'm...I'm not sure."
V: "Don't ever be afraid of the truth."
C: "I don't want to hurt you. I don't ever want to disappoint you."
V: "By returning above?"
C: "I feel like I've failed."
V: "Catherine, every moment that we share is a triumph and a gift. And every one of those moments is a lifetime--complete. There is no failure. It doesn't mean our dream can never be. It just means that now is not the right time. You came here to grieve and to begin to heal. But now, your destiny is to be in both worlds. You're a woman of both worlds. That is who you are."
C: "But my heart is here."
V: "And my heart is with you...wherever you are. You stand for me...for us...for our dream. You carry our light. That, too, is your destiny."
C: "Do you think that someday...will we ever be together...truly together?"
V: "Only if and when we understand how great the sacrifices, how large the fears and are able to move through them."
C: "I'm not scared."
V: "Catherine, we are something that has never been. And our journey is one that none have ever taken. We are just now setting out. We must go with courage. And, we must go with care."
The scene: On Catherine's balcony. Vincent has come to her with a revealing confession.
V: "Catherine."
C: "I wonder if I'll ever not be surprised to see you there?"
V: "We've never withheld the truth from each other."
C: "No."
V: "Catherine, there are things I must tell you...about who I am and...what I am."
C: "Vincent, to me you're beautiful."
V: "What I have to tell you is not beautiful. It's terrifying and shameful. But, it is the truth."
C: "Then I want to hear it."
V: "It's about Lisa. About what she meant in my life."
C: "Yes?"
V: "I would watch her dance. She would dance in the great hall...alone..for herself...for me. There was nothing in the world as beautiful as Lisa."
C: "And you desired her? There is no shame in that."
V: "For me there is."
C: "Why?"
V: "Because I hurt her. Because in my desire I forgot who I was...who I am. As she moved closer I wanted to hold her. She was dancing and then I felt a pull--it was pulling me to her and I reached out for her. Suddenly, in her eyes, I saw fear of me. I...I saw myself, but I couldn't let go of her. These hands wouldn't let go of her and I hurt her. And I knew that these hands were not meant to give love."
C: "These hands are beautiful. These are my hands."
The scene: During a brief respite in his illness, Vincent prepares to leave Catherine's apartment and return to the tunnels:
V: "Whatever happens, whatever comes, know that I love you."
