These scarves are an admirable and simple solution. Use a variegated mohair for one and a variegated chenille for the other. It takes between 250-400 yards of yarn to make a scarf, depending on the length desired. The bias knit patterns cause the colors to blend and break up the "stripiness" of variegated yarns, showing them to their best advantage.

Welting Fantastic - multiple of 11 stitches
Cast on 33 stitches (or desired width in a multiple of 11)
Row 1 of the pattern begins on the wrong side.
Rows 1-5: Knit
Rows 6,8,10 *K2 tog, K2, (increase 1 by knitting and purling in the same stitch) 2x, K3, SSK * Repeat to end of row.
Rows 7,9: Purl
I used Brunswick Impressions Mohair, and knit it on size 8 needles. This stuff is discontinued, but if you see it, snap it up, it's
everything you could ask from a mohair, great yardage and a soft luxurious hand. For this scarf, I cast on two repeats (36 sts.) of the
following pattern plus two edge stitches ON EACH SIDE and continued without any shaping until the desired length.
Old Shale - multiple of 18 stitches
Cast on 40 stitches (or desired width in a multiple of 18 + 4 edge stitches)
Try either of these when you have a quick gift to make, or when you don't have enough of that luxury variegated blend for a
sweater.
