Mayhew on April 12, 1672 at Yarmouth, Massachusetts.
Thomas Tupper II, (the son of Thomas Tupper, one
of the "ten men of Saugus," who founded
Sandwich, Massachusetts ) married Martha Mayhew,
the daughter of the notorious Governor Thomas
Mayhew. Martha's brother, the Rev. Thomas Mayhew, married
Jane Paine and they had a daughter; Jerusha Mayhew who
married Joseph Wing, son of John.
Rev. Thomas Mayhew was lost at sea in 1657, leaving
young Jerusha without a father at the age of seven. By
all accounts, the widow and children of Rev. Mayhew
suffered severe financial difficulties; Jerusha Mayhew (wife of Joseph Wing
and the Mayhew Family, relying heavily
upon the charity of the Thomas Tupper. There is no
question that when Joseph Wing married Jerusha, it was a
marriage in which Jerusha's uncle, Thomas Tupper, had a
great deal of influence. While the Mayhew name was and
still is an honored and significant name of worth, The Mayhew Family of Martha's Vineyard
was basically destitute. After Joseph Wing's death in
1679, Jerusha married Thomas Eaton of Shrewsbury,
Monmouth Co., East Jersey. Jerusha survived Thomas, but
he left her very well off; Thomas Eaton's will.
The narratives of Matthew Mayhew, Jerusha's brother, tell
of the extreme financial hardships caused by his father's
death. Visit The Tombstone of Bethia Mayhew
