[Manassas Journal, 30 May 1947]
CUSHING, MRS. R. B. The sudden death of Mrs. R.B. Cushing, which occurred at her home, near Wellington, last Saturday, was a great shock to the entire neighborhood and community, for she was a friend highly esteemed by all who knew her. Death came without giving hardly the slightest warning. She arose Saturday morning in good health and spirits, to attend to her household affairs. At about noon she was taken suddenly ill, and died that afternoon at four o'clock. Mrs. Cushing is survived by her husband and two children, Mrs. James R. HAMILTON LYNN. Born, raised and died in the same house, the family homestead near Bull Run, summarizes much of the quiet life of Hamilton Lynn, Centerville District farmer who passed away on Friday, May 3rd 1940. He was the son of James E. and James M. Lynn, being born on May 27th 1862, in the heart of the battlefield area. Here he chose to remain. In latter years, he and his sister, Virginia, were all that was left of the immediate household, although a sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Murtaugh (who survives him) lived near by. "Jennie" as she was known passed several years ago. Mr. Lynn was intensely interested in all civic matters and was widely read. He never missed an election up to the last year or so when he became too feeble to survive his most choice privilege. The funeral was held from the Centerville M. E. Church, the Rev. Carl Maxwell officiating. In his sermon the minister characterized the deceased as an honest and upright citizen. Certainly this described him as no other phrase could. The pallbearers were Messrs. John T. DeBell, A.J. Robey, Ben Cross, C.D. Robertson, Howard Havener, and Claybourne Wells. Interment was in the Episcopal Church cemetery, Centerville. Besides his sister, he is survived by several nieces and nephews; Mr. William Adamson of Bristow, Dr. B. L. Poole of Herndon, Virginia, Miss Edith Thompson, of Falls Church and others. HENRY F. LYNN HAS ANSWERED "HERE" – Died at "Lawnville" Monday – One of Prince William County’s Most Prominent Business Men – Was First President National Bank of Manassas. This county and especially Manassas was shocked last Monday, when news reached here of the death of Henry F. Lynn, president of the National Bank of Manassas, and a wealthy citizen of much prominence in Prince William County and this Section of the state. After a year of declining health, due partly to his advanced years, the end came Monday noon, at "Lawnville," the Lynn home, located near Catharpin, death removing from this section one of its life-long citizens whose many years had been spent in the upper part of the county, the place of his birth. The famous Prince William cavalry of the civil war also loses an honored member, as Mr. Lynn belonged to that organization and saw four years of service in the war between the States. Surviving him are his widow and one daughter, Mrs. S. W. McCarthy, of Delaplane, and five grandchildren. The funeral services, held yesterday afternoon, were attended by a host of friends from the entire countryside, who came to pay final tribute to one whose charitable and sincere friendship had endeared him to everyone. The beautiful floral offerings were numerous. Rev. Coe, of the Southern Methodist Church at Gainesville, officiated during the ceremony. The remains were taken to Little Georgetown, near Broad Run, for interment. Mr. Adams, of The Plains; Hon. T. H. Lion, of Manassas; Chas. R. McDonald, Dr. C. F. Brower, F. H. Sanders, of Catharpin; and W. N. Tiffany, of Fauquier, were the pallbearers. Mr. Lynn was a gallant soldier in the Civil war and was always loyal to the cause. Since that time he has taken an active part in all Confederate reunions. Soon after the war he became actively engaged in farming and stock raising and was very successful. In later years he became connected with several banking institutions in Virginia and the district of Columbia. He was the first and only president of the National Bank of Manassas. Soon after launching in business in early life he became recognized as a man of rare qualifications, and he secured and maintained the esteem and confidence of his business associates and the community. For a man who never aspired to or held an elective office, he transacted more business for others, by reason of the confidence reposed, than any other resident of the county. His presence will be greatly and deeply missed through this section. [Manassas Democrat 8 Oct 1914]

His mother, before her marriage, was Nancy Diggs Currell, also of Loudoun. His late illness, borne with resignation, lasted only from Tuesday until late Friday. LEWIS C. LYNN died at the Colvin emergency hospital in Annapolis, MD, on last Thursday evening, following an operation which developed no possible hopes of recovery, in the sixty-sixth year of his age. Up to a short period before going to the hospital, although not feeling in his usual health, Mr. Lynn attended to his daily business routine, and manifested a cheerfulness which indicated a freedom from any serious physical infirmity. When the disclosures of the operation were made known it came as a shock to his family and his numerous friends in this section of the County. Just nine days after the surgeons knife disclosed the hopelessness of the case; away from his home and children but in the presence and under the soothing administrations of his devoted wife and his faithful medical attendants, the soul of Lewis C. Lynn passed to the Great Beyond. He was conscious up to a short time of his death, and with that calm resignation, born of Christian fortitude, he arranged his business affairs and gave directions as to the selection of pallbearers and the hums to be used in his funeral service. He selected, to be read, the Twenty-third psalm, and the following hymns: "He Leadeth Me," "Guide Me, Oh, Thou Great Jehovah," and "We Shall Not Always Sleep." The body arrived here Saturday morning, and conveyed to their last resting place in the Sudley Church cemetery beside the loved ones who preceded him to the better world. The pallbearers, relatives and near friends of the deceased were Henry F. Lynn, F.S. Sanders, Jos. F. Lewis, J.P. Leachman, Clarence Lynn and William M. Wheeler. The large concourse of friends and relations who stood with bared heads, around the grave of the deceased, while the solemn burial services were being performed by the Rev. Homer Welsh, pastor of Sudley Church, spoke in silence of the love and high esteem in which Lewis C. Lynn was held. When the last sad rites had been performed by palcing upon his grave the many floral tributes of loving hearts and hands, the thought most uppermost was that in his death his wife had lost a faithful and devoted husband; his children an affectionate, indulgent father, and the community an exemplary citizen. The deceased is survived by his widow, who is a daughter of Col. J. T. Leachman, and by two sons, Charlie by his first marriage with Miss Bonham, of Clarke County, and John P. by his last marriage, and also by three brothers, Messrs. Currell, Oscar, and Clarence Lynn, and four sisters, Mesdames Addie Cushing, Laura Sanders, Nannie Wheeler, and Hattie Pattie. [17 March 1910 Manassas Democrat]

DEATH TAKES LADY BORN IN BATTLE OF MANASSAS, MRS. ROBERTA L. LYNN. Manassas this week mourns a lady who was born when the Second Battle of Manassas was at its height, with bullets flying over the house in which she was born. The death of Mrs. Roberta Leachman Lynn at Raleigh, N.C. in her 97th year broke a link with a historic period of Prince William County life. She was born at the family homestead near Groveton. She was 96 years old July 10. She died Sunday of last week at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W. B. Died May 16th, 1872. SALOME ELLA LYNN youngest daughter of LEVI C. and ADELINE LYNN, age 9 years the 8th day of October. The subject of this notice was a child of remarkable sprightliness and ability. She had advanced considerably in literature for one of her age. She took great delight in reading and memorizing the Scriptures, and the day previous to her demise, she said to her mother that Jesus had been in the room and that she was going to heaven and after sang the line "I want to be an Angel." Soon after she became speechless, and breathed her last in the full hope of Redeeming love. [NOTE: This is from a newspaper clipping in my collection; the name of the periodical is not cited.]
