Though small for a draft horse, Justin
Morgan proved his meddle. He had tremendous muscular development
and strength, and great heart. Subjected to hard use, he was still
sound in every respect when he died from an injury at the age
of 32 years. As a very prepotent sire, Justin Morgan's sons and
daughters and subsequent generations so resembled "the Morgan
horse" that a type was soon formed. Like their sire, his
offspring stood out in a crowd for their beauty as well as their
qualities of versatility, endurance, longevity and good temperament
As pioneers began to move west, the Morgan
horse went with them, establishing fine lines across the United
States. During the Civil War their courage under fire could not
be questioned. The United States Government developed a quality
breeding program. During the 1920's and '30's a number of colleges
and universities also had significant breeding programs.
Inspite of a decline in popularity between
the two World Wars, the Morgan is recognized as an excellent family
horse. The demand has increased steadily for the last twenty years.
