Quote of the Moment - Speak not to me of Redwall. I would not go within a mile of it. I have listened to the talk around the campfires since I was nought but a whelp. The place is accursed!~Sawney Rath

This is the final update of The Long Patrol at its home of six years, members.aol.com/m3may/longpatrol.html

The reason is that The Long Patrol, The Redwall Newsline, and RWTV are packing up and moving to a new home!

You'll notice there have been very few updates the last few weeks-- this is why. I've been redesigning and moving the sites over to their new homes at:
www.longpatrolclub.com
The Newsline and RWTV can now be found at:
newsline.longpatrolclub.com
rwtv.longpatrolclub.com
Please update your bookmarks and come on over! After you're done exploring the site, swing by and register at our new forum (powered by vBulletin), forums.longpatrolclub.com

I thank everyone who has supported the site over the years and hope you'll relocate with us.

Regards!

10/8/02 2:25 AM EDT - Review of Triss Posted
What's this? No waiting a year for the review? 'fraid not.

I've completed my review for Triss and have posted it here. Along with the review debuts a quasi-new format for The Redwall Bookshelf-- most notably a new banner and revised list formatting. As of yet, only the main Bookshelf page and Triss are in the new format, but I should get all the older reviews switched over soon enough.

So, get on over and read my review of Triss, then come discuss the book on the LP Forum's Triss board!

10/5/02 10:50 PM EDT - Massive Update Madness!
Lots of updates to run through tonight, so here we go.

First, if you haven't heard about it yet, swing by Redwall Lost, a "one of a kind redwall comic. It chronicles the adventures, in the modern age, of Matthew Sworber and his team to rediscover Redwall, which has been lost for centuries."

Next up, Chapter 23, written by Slagar the Cruel, of The Sword of Martin has been posted! In this chapter, Trager the Beast finally reaches the Plains of Erian and their startling past stands revealed. Also, the fate of Dewblossom. Go read it!

In the Editorials section, Keyla chimes in once more, this time posing the question: Is Redwall moral?

Finally updated is the Nameday Archive, which now includes all of Year #6's winning entries. We've got some great winners here, written by Furrtil, Clearspring Otter, and Slagar the Cruel. Be sure to read them.

Next on the run down, LP Forum member Caleyin recently had the opportunity to attend one of BJ's booksignings. Her story has been added to the Brian Jacques: Master Storyteller section.

Finally, I've now added a section to the Newsline devoted to Brian's upcoming autobiography, tentatively entitled A Divvil of a Lad. Divvil is expected to be released by Philomel sometime in 2003.

That covers everything for now. More later.

10/5/02 5:00 PM EDT - The Angel's Command ARC Cover
That lovable bootleg site, eBay, now has somebody selling off an Advance Reading Copy of The Angel's Command. Included is a scan of the cover. Now, this is obviously not the final cover (I'm hoping they keep either Michael Koelsch or David Wyatt), but it is a cover, nonetheless (and a cool one, at that).

Special thanks to Forum member yankeemb7 for directing my attention to the site.

The Angel's Command is slated for release on March 31st, 2003.

10/3/02 11:00 PM EDT - Ask Brian @ Terrouge, Editorials
Erin, the Editor-in-Chief of Terrouge, has secured an interview with the chappie himself, Brian Jacques (to take place on October 12th). In preparation, she's inviting all Redwallers to submit questions for her to ask him. She can't guarantee that they'll all be asked, but you can bet she'll fit the really good ones in somewhere. The deadline for questions is October 8th. If you have one you'd like to submit for consideration, swing by the "Redwall News" section of the Terrouge Forums and post in the appropriate thread.

As a personal request, please think up really good questions, not more "Do Redwallers have bathrooms?" or "What do you think of Mad Cow disease?" Chances to ask Brian questions are rare and we don't want to waste it. I'm looking forward to seeing some tidbits about upcoming releases (which I'll be sure to report on if there are any).

In other news, we've got a fresh editorial by Keyla up in the Editorials section. Be sure to go read it.

 9/30/02 9:15 PM EDT - Triss Day!
The fifteenth book in the Redwall Series hits shelves today and the fans rejoice.

Having flipped through the book, examined the artwork, and read the first batch of chapters, here are my initial thoughts on it. We'll start with the new illustrator, David Elliot. The one area where Elliot really impressed me was with the map. Right off the bat, he shrugged off the conventional approach to this series standard and instead went for an almost three-dimensional approach. The map is drawn at an angle, as if this were an actual model of Mossflower set on a table top and you were filming it diagonally with a camera. You can actually see Salamandastron towering over the sea, which is a very nice effect. The downside to this map is that it makes Redwall seem like it's right across the street from the mountain, rather than the lengthy journey away it is. Still, it's impressive. Now, the art itself isn't as impressive. It's good, but not great. It looks like a cross between Fangorn's style and Gary Chalk's. It falls just shy of Fangorn's realism and has a hint of the abstract quality that graced Chalk's work. Needless to say, it will take some getting used to. But, it's not "bad" and I'm anxious to see what Elliot has in store for us.

Now, the story, so far, is still unfolding. The albino ferrets (known as "Pure Ferrets" in the book) have quickly been established on Riftguard, as has Triss and her fellow slaves. Interestingly enough, Triss has not been shown to be a Mariel/Martin/Felldoh/Mattimeo type slave-- she desires her freedom, but as of yet has not vowed vengeance upon Kurda or the others at Riftguard and, likewise, has yet to show defiance towards them. She's not without spine, but I'd equate it with the way Keyla got by in Marshank, using her wits to navigate her way around the ferret's moods rather than earning their wrath with cheek. Having a heroine not obsessed with revenge is refreshing and I'm hoping that won't change.

In the months leading up to Triss, it has been theorized that the two "former dibbuns" mentioned in the Loamhedge note would be Sarobando and Bragoon (also mentioned in the note), making them dibbuns in Triss. Many expected Sarobando and Bragoon would be the "pair of wandering Dibbuns" who "accidentally discovers the long lost entrance to Brockhall", as the dustjacket puts it. Well, it turns out that those two Dibbuns are named "Bikkle" and "Ruggam". A speedy flip through revealed no mention of either "Sarobando" or "Bragoon". So, on this issue, we're left with two possibilities: 1) Sarobando and Bragoon are not the Dibbuns mentioned in the letter; or 2) Despite the wording, we won't meet these Dibbuns "now growing old" prior to Loamhedge. As a point of interest, the DAB appears on page 14 in Chapter 2 of the book. It has yet to resurface, but even so, it was an amusing scene to read and my congratulations go out to DAB for their immortalization in the world of Redwall.

As has been reported, Triss takes place after The Taggerung. "How long after?" is a question I'm sure is on many of your minds. The answer is actually given, in the form of the young badger Sagaxus imitating his father, Lord Hightor: "Why your mother even named you Sagaxus I'll never know. She said you were supposed to be like that old Badger Lord she'd read of, Russano the Wise, her fifth great-grandsire." So, this is set (going by Sagaxus) eight badger generations later. Quite a length of time, even longer than the gap between Salamandastron and Redwall, I'd wager.

What makes this book refreshing, though, is that it's really the first Redwall book to feature a completely new cast of characters since Salamandastron. Having characters carry-over, showing a progression in the world of Redwall, is all well and good, but one could argue that one of Brian's strengths was that he could make each generation as unique as the rest. Having no established characters is a nice change of pace, taking me back to my first days of reading Redwall when everyone was new.

So, there you have my initial impressions. A full review should be up within two weeks after I finish the book. To tide you over, for a limited time I'm posting a few scans from the book, showcasing the map (by David Elliot), two of David Elliot's chapter illustrations, and the back of Troy Howell's cover. Please do not repost these images.

 9/29/02 2:15 AM EDT - Editorial Update
During my project-induced absence, quite a few editorials from Keyla piled up. As such, I've got five new ones for your reading pleasure.

As always, Keyla tackles a variety of issues sharing some very compelling thoughts and insights into the workings of the Redwall Series. In this latest batch, he breaks the books into "Old", "Middle", "Modern", and "Post-Modern" classes; dissects the Otter species and Triss character list; tackles the similarities between The Taggerung and The Lord of the Rings (there are more than you'd think); and, finally, gives us his final thoughts on Triss right before its release (and I do mean right before). ;)

So, be sure to head on over to the Editorials section to read all the new additions.

9/27/02 10:25 PM EDT - Free Stuff Alert
I'd meant to have those Editorials up by now, but things keep on popping up. I'll be sure to get them up before Triss comes out on Monday, though.

The reason for this update is to let you all know that there are free Redwall goodies to be had.

The national chain of bookstores, Waldenbooks, is gearing up for Triss' release (and capitalizing on Taggerung's PB release) and putting books from the Redwall Series on display. As part of those displays, they're offering free Redwall bookmarks. These are the same bookmarks that are being offered through the Redwall Readers Club, except you can get them for free. There are six in all-- depicting Tammo, Tsarmina, Sunflash, Ungatt Trunn, Captain Snow, and Klitch & Goffa. They're simply cropped portions of Troy Howell's book covers with a note on which book the character was in, but still look pretty nice. On the back is a list of Brian's books through Triss. I've scanned in a shot of all six bookmarks, front and back. Please do not repost this image.

So, head on down to your local Waldenbooks to pick one up. If any of you encounter this promotion in any other bookstores, be sure to let me know. As a point of interest for you collectors out there, Waldenbooks has carried the latest Redwall trading card when a new Redwall book is released.

9/15/02 12:30 AM EDT - Release Dates Update
Well, I'll start off with the good news (not that I have any bad news). ;) My project has been finished, so things will settle into a more relaxed pace and we'll be caught up in no time. After that's done, the "rebuilding" I mentioned a few weeks back will occur. More on that at a later date.

The Taggerung hit shelves a few weeks back in paperback. As such, it can now be discussed freely in the Books section of our Forum. A spoiler ban is in effect for Triss, though, so all posts concerning Brian's latest book should be made in the new Triss Discussion section.

Speaking of release dates, I've updated the Releases page to reflect new street dates that I hadn't added, yet. Most notable among them is the September 30th, 2002 release of Triss (approx. 15 days away) and the March 31st, 2003 release date of The Angel's Command (which I'm actually looking forward to more than Triss).

As for what's coming on the site-- this week should see the Editorials section updated, the Nameday Archive section updated, and a few more tweaks. Beyond that, I've got a couple of surprise projects in the work for RWTV (on top of finishing the Mattimeo and, yes, Martin the Warrior reviews). We'll also be seeing the return of The Redwall Ring! WebRing broke away from Yahoo! a few months back and most of my complaints were resolved, so the Ring will be returning and admitting new members (some can actually join already, but I won't be outlining how until I'm ready). Possibly with a new design. We'll have to see. Stay tuned.

August 15th, 2002
Well... here we are. August 15th, 2002. Six years ago, I started this club and website. Six years of being online, six years of watching fellow sites rise and fall, six years of throwing my two cents in.

And six years of meeting great people whom I'm proud to call "friends". Without them, these six years wouldn't exist. So, to all of you guys (you know who you are), "thanks!" I've just spent a better portion of the day talking with a lot of you. Let's do it again sometime.

Six years is a pretty big milestone in the ROC. The only site I can think of that tops it is Redwall.org. And that's saying something. So, raise your glasses. Here's to many, many more!

Normally, I stick a big site update here to commemorate another year gone by. Like I said a few days ago, though, I'm knee deep in a project and haven't had the proper time. However, there was one thing I thought I could do that would qualify as an Anniversary update. What is it?

Well, by George.... THE TAGGERUNG REVIEW IS FINALLY FINISHED!!!!!

Yep, the Bookshelf is current. Time to wait for Triss. I promise to be quicker with that one. ;)

Before I sign off, though, a big thank you to LPF Emeritis, Slagar the Cruel, for the great Anniversary pic he drew of all of us Forum-goers. You can see the pic for yourself here. Thanks again, Slagar!

And with that, I'll see you next update! Long live The Long Patrol!
