-The following information is a list
of funded programs controled by the R&B Foundation. All of the following
programs were developed to assist R&B artist that are in financial need.
In some cases, the funding applies only to Motown recipients, and in others
cases the funding applies to Rhythm and Blues artists as a
whole.
This fund was established by Berry Gordy to honor the memory of his
sister, Gwendolyn who was a talented producer, songwriter, entrepreneur
and pioneering music executive of Motown Records. The fund provides
emergency financial assistance to former Motown artists of the 1960’s
and 1970’s. The assistance may include reimbursement or payments for
uninsured medical care and expenses, emergency assistance, burial
assistance and other forms of charitable financial assistance, as
determined by the fund’s committee. To receive such assistance, artists
must be deemed eligible under the guidelines established by the board of
directors of the Rhythm and Blues Foundation.
The Motown/Universal Music Group Fund was established by Universal Music
Group to provide grants for health, welfare, and medical purposes, in
the form of monetary assistance, to former rhythm and blues recording
artists affiliated with Universal Music Group or any of its wholly owned
affiliated labels.
Named in memory of one of the Foundation’s founding directors, the Doc
Pomus Financial Assistance Program provides emergency financial
assistance to rhythm and blues artists for medications, wheelchairs,
dental work, eyeglasses, hearing aids, musical instruments, and funeral
expenses. Since its inception, the Foundation has provided over $800,000
in service and Financial Assistance Grants. The demand for the Doc Pomus
Financial Assistance Program is continuing to increase, as our artists
grow older. We know that our ability to assist those most needy will
depend on the support those who love and appreciate the legacy of the
music.
