THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER

Black Entertainers and Sports Lawyers Association

The National Association of Campus Activities (NACA)

Just because you've played at a few colleges, and was able to get a gig here and there at the various colleges in your area, doesn't mean that you've played the college circuit! NACA is the official college circuit avenue for serious musicians on their way up the popularity ladder, or those that are at the top of fame and want to establish a greater forum of followers.

Colleges come to the regional, & National Conventions sponsored by NACA and buy acts for events for the school year. One buyer may have 15 colleges to buy for. That's why it could be very important to be involved with this organization. Most of the events are one nighters, and acts go from $850 to $5,000 a night. Great for independent record companies also.

The benefits of NACA:

  • Record companies can set up promotional tours,  and generate revenue at the same time.

  • Agents will have an avenue to promote their acts.

  • Managers  can find agents to promote their act(s).

This is a very expensive organization to get involved with, costs can run from $850 to $3,000.

Important: Only worth joining if you showcase, and get a booth!

Showcases are very much like auditioning to 1,000's of college activity buyers. Booths will allow you to point the perspective buyer in the direction of where you can do business. It's very difficult for many  professionals to get involved because of the auditioning atmosphere the showcases present. But is very worth wild if your management needs assistance in filling your calendar dates. There are no guarantees of success at these convention, so planning is very important, and marketing a slick product does incourage potential buyers.

prnweswire logo

One of the nations biggest (NSO) News Service Organizations ...PRNEWSWIRE. This is a must for the promotion of your act. They distribute news releases nationwide, and regionally. For about $200 to join, and $200 per 400 word news release, you can get statewide or national exposure on a major level. The same information you see on the local news stations or information on your favorite rock group, was released through a News Service Organization. The most popular services are Associated Press (API) and PrNewswire, and Reuters. If you plan on sending your project on tour, you can promote to all the available news stations, radio stations, and newspaper publications in that area for much less than you could if you were doing it on your own. PR people that do this for a living use this service to promote their clients, you should too! Promote as you go, or promote in advance with your itenerary being posted on your news releases. Great for bands and managers that don't have a lot of money but want to get inexpensive promotion. Not to say, to promote with PRNEWSWIRE can't get expensive. They have a package for everybody that can pay over $200. If you plan on being in the business, and doing things on your own, remember one thing, the price of doing it on your own is not cheap!

Assco. for independant music

This organization has all the Independent Record Distributers as members. They are your best bet in getting distribution nationally. They are the people that will help to push your produce also.

You need to go to the National Convention, get familiar with the other dirstibutors, and find one great distributor, or a couple of small distributors that can distribute in the reigion you want to consentrate on.

Warning: Don't go to this convention with less than 3,000 CD's or tapes also, make sure that if you need distribution, you will need a considerable number of CD's for today's market. You'll need at least 1,000 to 2,000 CDs to give away for promotion! Your distributor may need a considerable number just to promote to their clients.
