Sword research Topic:

Swords for Sea Service: Naval Swords and Daggers of the World

One can assume that every nation that has a Navy has a sword pattern for its Naval officers. Many of these patterns have been documented in the referfence literature, but many have not, in particular those patterns of the smaller or less nautically active nations. This research project is an effort to compile a more comprehensive photo library of the naval swords, cutlasses and dirks of the worlds navies.

Request for Information

Please send us photos of your naval swords cutlasses and dirks. Please include any identification information, and the supporting evidence for that identification (specific photos and pages in reference books, direct personal knowledge of its use, period photos, etc). We are looking for swords from any nation and any period. Variations on a specific sword type (a presentation piece, an exceptionally fine piece, a custom made item, etc.) are particularly desirable. We would like to compile as complete a record of a specific pattern and all of its variations as is possible.

Recent Naval Sword, Cutlass and Dirk Submissions:

  • Kingdom of Two Sicilies, Naval Officers stirrup hilt, sword, c. 1800
  • Textual description of Modern Chilean navy practice in wearing of Naval Dirks.
  • Spanish Naval Officers' Sabre, 1857 pattern, contributed by Juan J. Pérez

  • Any help is appreciated.

Please E-mail any inputs and images

I attach to this message two scanned images of a Spanish naval sabre. It is the Naval Officers' Sabre, 1.857 pattern. It is well documented in Barcelo Rubi's book, "Spanish Portable Weaponry" ("Armamento Portátil Español"), and the present sword meets completely the specifications of the pattern. The sabre has a brass hilt with folding guard and a grip covered with white shark skin, all modelled after a British pattern, and a slighly curved blade, reinforced with a nerve in its whole lenght. The blade is single edged except in the final third, where it becomes double edged by means of a remarkable "elman" or edge extension, like in Turkish sabres. Some numerical data: Blade lenght: 760 mm Hilt lenght: 130 mm Curvature: 10 mm The sabre has a black leather scabbard, with brass mounts and one suspension ring. This sabres were all made in the government-owned Toledo Factory. For more info about the Factory, please have a look at my article in Mike McWatters' site (The Sword Collector). Do not hesitate to contact me for further explanations. Best regards, Juan J. Pérez
