Corner of Frankfort Ave and Pope Street, Louisville, Kentucky

1. Frankfort Bar:  That has been a bar since I was a kid, (1950's).  Changed owners many times, but the name
    remained.
2. Clifton Hardware: That was great place to me.  To the left of it was a Ben Franklin 5 & 10 store,  On the corner of
State and Frankfort was a bakery.
3. Dr. Phillips, the Dentist, got my first set of falsies at the tender age of 17 or so from him, long tale there.
4. A&P groceries, it has been so many things since I  left home, mostly a bar of some kind.
5. Youngs Drug store, one of our friends worked there, he used to get us rubbers.  Paid for his first auto with his
    salary.
6. Apartments, in my day there was not a porch there just a series of steps, we used to sit on at night.
7. Jerry's pool room, the focal point of most all of us, no girls allowed.
8. Fire station, What great bunch there.  They would fix our bikes, help us cross Frankfort Ave, if busy.

1. The Clifton Barber Shop - Never been there, used Walcott's on Melwood Ave.
2. The Clifton Grill - Super hamburgers

3. In the background you can see the Fire Station, picture above #8.

1. The Kentucky School for the Blind - The school takes up a whole city block.
The block being, Frankfort ave, State Street, Brownsboro road and Haldeman ave
2. Used to be a Dry Goods Sore here in my day (1950's)

3. Used to be a Bakery sore here in my day (1950's)

Benjamin Franklin Grade School, grades from kindergarten to 6th grade.
In my day, there were no school buses, we walked to and from school. Up hill both ways.
Indians, wild animals, in snow, rain.

River City Housing transformed a Clifton neighborhood landmark, the 1892 Franklin School into 12 apartments for low/moderate income senior citizens. Following historic preservation guidelines guaranteed keeping the schoolhouse’s original charm. Meeting our desire for comfortable, energy-efficient, attractive and secure senior living space matched new practicality to the original charm. The result is one of the most unique apartment facilities in the area.

Residents must be age 55 or older and meet income guidelines.

The apartments adjoin the United Crescent Hill Ministries new home, which allows Franklin School Apartment residents have easy access to free lunch Monday through Friday, regularly scheduled social activities, a computer lab, and an exercise room to use after the twice-weekly coffee and donuts in the morning.
