Alsea 2-5-98

Went fishing on the Alsea River on 2/1/98, hooked up on a fish below Clemons Park about 11 o'clock, got it to shore, a dark hen, looked like it was spawned out so I released it. Got into another fish in the Ranger Station area, it was also a spawned out hen, so it went back into the water. Only about 500 fish at the hatchery.

Ana Res 7-15-99

Fished Ana Res. Thursday evening and Friday morning. The wind was brisk and the fish were few and far between. When you hook up to a nice rainbow they are nice and fat. I did manage to catch one that went about 16", which I released. Bank fishermen were scoring about the same with power bait.`I was trolling black Rooster Tails. We had lots of wind, which made keeping my little aluminum boat on course a bit difficult. But, we were the only boat on the water and the camping was free. Don't get any better than that, Vern. Got any information or tips on Central or Eastern Oregon lakes? E-Mail me, GTHARDING@WEBTV.NET

Buoy 10 8-10-98

My son Mitchell and I (Skip Halverson of Gresham) went out of Hammond yesterday, 8-4-98. and fished Bouy 10 Sat. We saw very few fish taken Saturday....cleaning stations were not very busy....went out to the red line on Sunday....fish were being caught...we only caught one clipped Silver, Mitchell caught it of course....had a lot of strikes, but the fish just wouldn't impale themselves.....beautyful weather and a lot of fun, but not many fish

Clackamas

Clackamas River 1-25-99 (thanks very much to Shannon for this fantastic report)

The lower Clackamas River has been hot for Winter Steelhead. I nailed a 17 pound buck on the 12 JAN. 99. I've also hooked and landed many averaging 12 to 14 pounds. Any doe ball can pick up a steelhead on a spinner so that's why I've used a number of techniques. The pink aero fly has had It's share with a healthy chunk hammering the old bread and butter Corkies and Yarn with shrimp scent. Even when I fish a spoon of choice I always get my fish straight out in front of me never on the swing. Just above Barton park is where I do most of my damage. That drift holds alot of fish and nobody's fishing it. It seems like people are feeling lonely because all I see are combat fishing at Dog Creek and Clear Creek. The Oregon Fishing Club property on Eagle Creek has been rocking. Gary at Eagle Creek fish hatchery said to me today that eagle creek has had just over 400 fish thus far. Be cool.

This report thanks to: Shannon K. O'Brien of Wilsonville.

Clackamas Sept 25

Friday 9/25/98 & I was using eel this time.  I was down in Oregon City after a school ofm sturgeon and I nailed a whopping 56'' sturgeon making last weeks 48'' like a baby and the 2nd one in a week!

Clackamas Sept. 4, 7, 12, '98

My son and I fished below River mill on Sunday. We caught one steelhead and Silver adult, and a dozen Jacks. We were using green # 4 spinnersand casting eggs cured in "Quick Cure", the eggs won out. Get day the son was out and we were catching fish. Sharp Hooks Pat Reichner

Clackamas Sept 4, 7, & 12th '98

Fished Upper Clack three times in the past week and a half. Caught five steelhead on day, three the next, and

two on the third. Ranged from 3 lb to 16 lb+. Landed one big fairly dark Springer. All fish were caught on #2

Mepps "See Best" Sprinner...coffee and black. Landed about 30 whitefish and another 10 trout. All fish were

caught between 8:00 am and 2:00 pm. Fishing the Upper Clack was poor in July... only caught eight steelhead

all month. Really started to pick up after August 15. Have had two multiple fish day in end of August and these

three in the beginning of September. My summer steelheading in the upper Clack is now over... have fun up

there!!! If you want more info... give me a call.... colin.kageyamaod@gte.net  Click here to send E-mail

Clackamas Update 10-15-98

Also to update report on the Upper Clackamas... the Coho have arrived. Saw the first pod above River Mill today. I don't fish for them but they should be up to Indian Henry by next monday. Fish under the bridge at the tail-out.

Clackamas 9-12-98

Upper Clackamas River 11 September 1998

Spotted steelhead in several drifts. Finally had a takedown of a black jig under a bobber, and landed a spunky 6 pound male with beautiful rainbow colors. A few casts later, I saw another steelhead move over and inhale the jig, but the exitement of watching the take made my hook setting sloppy, resulting in an immediate loss. There were many dark spring chinook finning in deep holes in the very upper section of the river which was a nice sight.

Clackamas 5-22-98

Fished Calckamus Friday Saturday and Sunday, 22-24 May 98, Saw two caught, I got nothing but a strike. Eggs/Sand Shrimp combo. Just above I-205 bridge.

Columbia River

Walleye 3-10-99

Fishing has been spotty and slow on the Columbia below McNary dam. The bite started picking up towards the end of February, but then the warm spell caused snow melt and the river is now muddy with about 4-6" visibility. Still remains cold, with the temp. at 38-39 degrees.  Fishing last Monday, their were 4 boats checked with nary a Walleye caught. As is usual for spring, weather/wind makes fishing an on and off affair.  Christof Cook  cjc@oregontrail.net

Cowlitz

Cowlitz 7-28-99

Fished the mouth of the Cowlitz today from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00.  In the Columbia just in front of the Cowlitz in about 16' of water we saw about 40 other boats who caught about 8 or 9 fish.  We had 2 takedowns but no catch.  Used orange flatfish with black spots.

this report thanks to:  Dan MacNeil "the Hazel Dell Hooker"

Cowlitz 8-8-97

Fished hard all day and only saw four fish caught. looked like 40 to 45 boats there. Never felt a hit. I got there at 6:00 am, fished all day without a bump on my line. Saw 4 fish caught. Stopped fishing about 3:oopm. There were about 45 boats there. Talked to the fish counter and he siad only checked two people with fish.

Cowlitz,  Kalama & Lewis (thanks to Carlena the Fishwitch)

Just a quick report from the Fishwitch regarding the yukko fishing conditions on the rivers this last weekend.  First, the Cowlitz on Saturday.  Heard on Friday that they lowered the river to 14,000 cubic whatevers per minute but still took only about 2 1/2 hours to do a typical 6 hour drift. Dumb!  Real high, fast water.  Drove to Kalama just to see what was happening there since the word is that the Kalama hasn't had any good fishing for ages. It was  one big raging mud puddle!!  Drove to the Lewis and did a very nice, very  short drift from the hatchery just to below. Did not have a lot of time. One guy caught 2 steelies on the Lewis just below the hatchery so that gave us some hope.I had never fished the Lewis but what I saw I liked and really want to go there  again when I have more time.  If you can give me any information about that river I would like to learn it better.  Bait of choice everywhere seems to be sand shrimp or egg clusters. The guy that caught the 2 on the Lewis was using eggs.  Also, we are looking for a jet sled about 18' - 20' with a decent size (360?) engine for a halfway decent, realistic price. After this last weekend we are for sure on this jet sled idea. We looked at them last month at the boat show and found one we are considering but I want to see what is out there "used"  before we take the plunge for "new" Gotta go. Keep in touch.

Cresent Lake 7-19-97

.Made a wild trip to Cresent lake today, left to late, finally got there at 9. Fishing day started by towing some folks disabled boat 1/2 way across the lake to the marina, by then realized not bringing the boat top, and wearing only shorts, t shirt and sandals was a major mistake. Fishing Partner got our 1st bite of the day at 3 oclock and the only two others we got. At least he landed all three. Decided driving back home tonight sounded better than staying there and complete cooking all the skin off our bodys. Came back with only 3 kokes but went way over on sunshine limits.   The first fish caught was a big fat 16+ incher, second one 12+ and nice, 3rd 9-10 inch range.......Believe it or not the 16+ was the first that was over 16 this year and thats out of over 400 put in my boat...(kokanee) did catch bigger browns..Didn't even catch the really nice fish at Paulina this year..nice size but not like in the couple of past years. Robert Nolan "kokanee Page" filed a report last week on Crescent and Said he caught some 16+ too so I assume there are more fish in that range. The one we caught was a very heavy fish for its size.. If one could get a limit of these size fish they wouldn't be disappointed in chosing to fish the lake I'm sure. He has some pics of them in his misc. reports dated 7/14 if you haven't seen them.

This was my first real fishing trip to Cresent. We used to take our boys there on vacation the 3rd week of August every year but I had no boat then and mostly just played in the water and camped. ( I did catch 1 very nice 21+ rainbow from shore one time I guess is about it)

For 2 or 3 years in a row we used to see an ole retired boy there (that 3rd week of August) and he fished for Mackinaw every morning and evening....he seemed to always come back to the dock with at least 1 and often 2 fish..He said he and 2 others fished almost exclusively for Macks until Salmon season started. Then his partners switched to salmon. He continued his Mack fishing and said that by season end he had more total weight in Macks than his partners did on their Macks and Salmon combined..From seeing his results every morning and evening I sure wouldn't doubt it. Must have known what he was doing out there.....Good Fishin To Ya.....

Deschuttes River

Upper Deschuttes 7-7-99

Saturday, we drifted and fished from Tetherow Log Jam to Big River Campground.About 1 mile downstream from the log am a large pine tree has fallen across the river. You can get down thru it, but it would be impossible to motor up. We caught several Rainbows and Browns to 15 inches using worms and rapala shad wraps. The trip was about 13 miles long and we were on the water about 7 hours.

Deschuttes River 7-25-98

Well my son and a friend went to the lower Deschutes over the weekend and got into some steel head. Not many, I think he said about a dozen in two days. They caught them on fly's, spinners, and jigs. Of coarse the most fun is on the fly rod. They road there bikes from the mouth upriver 5 miles, then fished there way back. I had heard from some of the guides that I worked with that there are a lot Rattle snakes this year. My son can tell you the same, they seen two. Ran over one with there bike in the twilight of the morning, gave them the willies.

this report thanks to:  Pat Reichner

Deschuttes 6-10-98

Water very high at 8,000+ cfs. Good fishing typically below 5,000 cfs.  Not good color either. Still, stoneflies were out in force, and big fish were loosing their inhibitions. Caught several fish in the 16 to 20 inch range. Fish are close to shore, in the weeds, in a lot of pocket water areas. Don't go wading until you have to. Don't find yourself parking your boat right on top of a trophy fish, either.  Orange body Stimulators in sizes #6 to #10 work. Be sure to bring elk hairs and adams in #16's and #18's, though, when the fish get picky.

this report thanks to:  jamess@egr.up.edu

Deschuttes 5-08-98

Fishing very slow on the Deshutes from Warm Springs to Trout Creek. The steelhead smolts seem to be the only thing biting (please release them) on everything we threw out. The river was very high 5400+ and fast . Wheather overcast and some high wind gusts. Water temp 48 deg. F

this report thanks to:  JLJConst

Deschuttes 5-17-98

Fishing was good over the weekend of 5/15 to 5/17, though the weather was questionable. Averaged 10 to 15 fish per person per day, from 8 to 16 inches. Heard that nymphs were the way to go, though we found it to be slow. Dry flies proved to be the most productive. #16 Elk Hair Caddis (tan) and #16 Adams caught the most fish. One of the party used

a #12 Stimulator (gold body) for three days without changing flies, and did very well. Only saw a handful of stoneflies, though the high temperatures were only in the upper 50's. Others on the river said that mayfly patterns were also working pretty well.

Detroit Reservoir

Detroit Res 6-20-99

Well go a little early and be somewhat patient but penty are being enough for every one there fishing off the dam is cool be prepared as always for weather change but been real nice so for a real beautiful sight on the hills around they still have snow on them some of them anyway.used Orange power bait seen a lot caught without bobber but caught some nice ones on slider bobbers. About 15 feet down let the wind have its way with it it will troll it and most of the time will catch morning on this lake seems to be the best but still enjoy the area even if you don't catch any lots to do there and surrounding areas. Lots of friendly people there and they will be stocking the lake in prep for the 4th of July so get ready to have some fun!

this report thanks to:  dowellh@lcc.ctc.edu (Howard)

Detroit Reservoir 1-9-99

After 5 hours of fishing got one Kokanee and threw it back. Saw one boat doing well, using worms near or on the bottom, others seemed to be having the same luck  as our boat. Interesting launch with the front wheels of our pickup about 6 feet into the lake. Launching ramp (old road) is too flat to make launching easy.  Great weather, sunny and cool. Water is muddy. Good Luck!!

this report thanks to:  Dick Marks

Detroit Reservoir 1-5-99

Well the rain and melting snow have had there effect, it is a little slow and a whole lot cold.Dress warm and wear good footing. Its a climb down for those who dare venture to fish the good spot at the log booms.Cast a little further than normal because the level of the lake is up and muddy and they were biting on worm and power bait(orange of course)maybe even use eggs and a size 12 hooks with 3lbs leader and it works just fine. Bobers are non-exestance not good right now, caught some real nice ones though took a frozen while to catch them. Will have pictures next round. Have fun Fishing all.

this report thanks to:  rho@cport.com (Howard Dowell)

Detroit Reservoir 11-10-98

Well all my fishing friends Its time to saddle up because we are back in business, the lake is down to prep for the runoff so fishing is ON, caught more than could count released all but caught real nice ones .Dress warm and wear boots beacuase you must hike down to the lake "use caution"

I was using power eggs, Fl orange and killed them at the boom logs at the Dam right at the base so don't be scared of the weather, morning is still the best, but anytime is okay at this point.Remember dress warm and fish on the bottom is great bobber okay but slow.

this report thanks to:  rho@cport.com (Howard Dowell)

Detroit Reservoir 7-20-98

Fishing is really slow if you fish off the dam you might think orange or chartuse power bait and be really patient most are trolling around the island right not using lures and fishing in the river isn't to bad.

this report thanks to:  Howard

Detroit Reservoir 5-1-98

It looks like Detroit is in shape for the summer, and conditions will be pretty much stable until the water warms up. The lake is full, and surprisingly has not gotten colder with all the run-off coming down the Santiam and Breitenbush. We brought home four limits of fair to excellent fish, all caught on trolling gear. The Breitenbush produced a few really nice trout for us, and Hoover was reliable as always.  This will probably be my last report for awhile. Some of you other Detroit regulars ought to send Dan a report, and share your favorite methods. If you see my big green smokercraft troll past, say hello. Good luck!

this report thanks to:   Crawler Hauler.

Detroit Reservoir 4-25-98

Detroit was a good choice on "opening day". Every boat I saw had fish, and most of the bank anglers looked pretty busy too. The stockers were a little bigger than the ones I reported catching last week, and our boat netted at least one definite holdover. I sure wish we could keep 10 fish, like the good old days. We could have easily brought home 20, the bite was that good.  Hoover was productive, and we also found a pod of fish on Breitenbush arm,  between Kanes and the bridge. If you want to put in at Hoover, be aware that  it is a pay to park ramp, and bring 5 bucks with you. Saw a camp cop  writing citations- be warned

this report thanks to:   Crawler Hauler.

Detroit Reservoir 4-20-98

Fished up near the hoover ramp, just because it was as unpopulated as I can remember ever seeing it, and I have been fishing this lake since the late sixties. I know that the rest of the summer will be a little different, so I stayed up in the hoover area and enjoyed the wide open spaces. The fish were all fairly small, some so small I suspect they were young natives. How small a fish will the state release, anyway? We managed to keep five limits in our boat, even though we had to release about fifty percent of the fish we caught 'cuz they were just little guys. The lake is down about ten-fifteen feet from full, but the ramp at hoover was usable.Caught all our fish on ford fenders with a wedding ring behind. We talked to a few bankfisherman that were doing absolutely nothing, and saw one boat take a few off of the bottom. All in all, a great day.

this report thanks to:   Crawler Hauler.

Detroit Reservoir1-10-98

I did good for trout today still fishing using power bait.  So did a few other people.  Near the dam is best spot this time of year and not too much competition.

Drano Lake 10-5-98

Fished Drano lake on Oct 3 and 4. Fishing was fair on Sat. trolling kwikfish. Caught one nice silver at 11lbs and one chinook at about 14lbs...lost a biiiggg one. Did see several more fish caught...one over 40lbs! Sunday was a graveyard. Saw two fish caught all day and didn't have a strike or even mark many fish. Very crowded.

Diamond Lake 8-10-97 thanks to "cuthroat"

August 1st I met my brother from Reno at Diamond Lake. All reports that I've had were that the fishing was terrible. Even the store & marina said things had been slow. Well I'd heard that before and it's such a nice place to camp we went there anyway. Let me tell you it was far fromslow, the first trip out we landed and released 30 trout the biggest one coming as my first fish (18 1/2"). Well in the two and a half days we caught and released over 100 trout. Yes there is a problem with chubs and the person who released them should be shot but there are plenty oftrout you just have to know where to look. Anyone heading there that would like more info can e-mail me at  mickey@molalla.net  Ron alias cutthroat.

Grande Rhonde River 10-25-98

Me and two other Washington State University students and I fished the Grande Ronde river last week and had an unbelievable day of catch and release steelhead fishing. Between the three of us we caught 8 steelhead in just over 4 hours. Jig and bobber, vibraxes, and corky and yarn all worked equally well. The Grande Ronde is unrivaled as far as steelhead fishing goes. No nets, bait, or commercial fishing on this river keep it as natural as any river in the U.S. Tight lines. Robb Hawkins.

Gray's Harbor area 10-5-98

We're all waiting for a little rain!!  There are Salmon in tide-water and they are trying to get upstream but are having little success.  The few Salmon that are driven to head up anyway are not dawdling but are firing right through to find a place to spawn.  As a consequence anglers in areas like the Copalis River are getting real excited with all the fish rolling around them and are getting plenty of casting practice.

East Lake

East Lake 8-21 99

Last Friday John Carskadon and I decided to try our luck at East Lake. We started out trolling but after we located fish we anchored and went to jigging. We caught our limit of kokanee ,`no` problem, but what was really exciting was, we also caught, and released, 6 nice Browns.  We were anchored in 70 ft of water and jigging flroescent orange with white down 35 to 40 ft deep. Jigs tipped with shoepeg corn. The Browns went from 15 to 17 inchews and one of the big ones took my jig as I was reeling in,right by the boat and only about 2 ft deep. What a thrill.

East Lake 8-19-99

Last evening we fished East Lake, starting about 5 in the afternoon until dark. The weather was partly cloudy with a light breeze just putting a small chop on the water. Should have been excellent conditions, but I guess the fish didn't know that. We "power trolled" streamer flies and Rapalas finally catching 4 Kokanee about 13' and 5 Browns. One Brown measured at 16" with the rest around 14". All in all not a very productive evening. But hey, being out fishing on East Lake on a beautiful Central Oregon summer evening, It don't get no better than that Vern. See Ya Jerry Harding

East Lake 7-28-99

Took three of the grandkids fishing at East Lake today. We got a late start and had to leave the lake by 3PM. We managed to catch some kokanee using a dodger with a black rooster tail trailing about 16" back. It looked like everybody that was using flashers was catching something. The wind was calm.temp about 80 with about 20 boats on the whole lake. It don't get no better than that,Vern.

East Lake 7-19-98 & (Paulina Lake)

East Lake (near Bend Oregon):

Had a great time at East Lake over the weekend even though the weather was fairly ugly.  I was unable to get to Paulina to do any jigging or at east either for that manner. It was very windy most of the weekend and with my driftboat it is almost impossible to hold a position slow enough to jig so we mostly trolled. I never found the kokanee in any numbers but they looked to be at about 50 feet (sound familiar?). We had lots of fun with rainbow, bronwns, and atalntic salmon on trolled flies right on top in shallow water. We also worked some structure throwing plugs but all we caught was a little brown and 1 atlantic. I did spend some time trolling deep looking for kokes but either I missed the spot or didn't have the right stuff on. We were the only ones motor trolling flies on the surface with no other attractors anyway. No one believed us when we told them how we were catching fish. I hooked and caught about a 15" rainbow right in front of a guy pulling a whole string of flashers. Should have seen his face when I released the fish. I thought he was going to hurl. It was priceless.

East Lake 7-4-97

East Lake was very good for smaller trout and some kokanee over the July 4th holiday.  Best time of day was early morning,  but a few larger browns have been caught jsut before dark.  Still fishing is popular this time of year with power bait just off the bottom,  but I mostly trolled (rapallas and ford fender with a green wedding ring).  I caught one rain bow about 21" long but most of the others were 8" to 12" long.  I also casted a super duper and caught a few smaller trout.

Fish Lake

Fish Lake (Harney County in Central Oregon)

We camped at Fish Lake this last Monday night. Got in about 4PM, so had just a short time to fish. Acouple of guys from Bend had been fly fishing and had caught 5 nice Brook trout. It's really pretty up there on Steens Mt. (Elev. 7471' ), but the road is wash board, bad, for the whole 18 miles from Frenchglen. Don't go if you don't want to develop some new rattles in your rig.

Hood Canal

Hood Canal 11-10-98

Fishing for Dog salmon (with a few Silvers thrown in) has been excellent at Hoodsport. Combat fishing rules apply!  Getting better at Potlatch and all small creeks from there toward Belfair. Green Pixies, 4/0 Siwash barbless, low and slow for a mouth bite or a Corky and green yarn and wait for the bite. Last 1/2 of outgoing tide is best. Take only what you need please.  GREAT FUN! 20 fish on a good day.  Smelt are showing up as well.

Lake Wenatchee 4-15-98

While fishing in lake wenatchee and having a very bad morning. My nephew and  I decided to try the west end of the lake after bad luck all morning in the east and north.  While floating around the west end we saw a school of fish below us so we stuck out our poles and POW started hitting dollys right and left. All were 3 to 6 or so lbs. I have pictures so dare me. Well you can't keep dollys there at least, but did we have a good time. So if your ever having a bad day sometimes their is an option. Trust me it can be fun.

Lake Billy Chinook 8-25-97

Rods are bending and fisherman are happy as Kokanee are being caught right and left by jigging in the upper arm of the Metolious. Three quarters of  the fish caught are foul hooked and must be released but are still fun to catch. 4-6 fish per rod in an afternoon of three hours were keepers. Trolling around and below the island in the Metolious arm is still very productive but the fish mouths are so soft this time of year you only get one out of three hooked in the net. Still you average one to two fish landed per hour and countless fish hooked. Lots of fun, weather was great. Only one day where weather kept us off the lake. Stange enough very few boats or fishermen on the lake. THose who were out were glad they were.  Good fishing and good luck. Tightlines to all. Gary New Portland Oregon.

Lake Billy Chinook 8-12-97

Made a mad dash over to Lake Billy Chinook today. Whew! was it hot.  Haven't fished there for a couple of years, but I took a friend over to show him what kokanee fishing is all about. Imagine never having caught a Koke, hard to believe. Well we had our first one in the boat by 9:30 a.m. not bad for only being on the water about 5 minutes. Really was'nt as good of trip for kokanee as some I've had but we still had fun. I took him up the headwaters of the deschutes for a little trout fishing, and to my surprize there are new regulations with signs plastered everywhere. Fly and artificial lures with barbless hooks only. Well we wanted to fish so I filed down the barbs on a crawdad colored roostertail spinner I had in my vest and walked up the draw. On about the third cast just the other side of a big boulder the spinner stopped.  Great I thought to myself. One spinner and already I've got it hung up.  I lifted up on the rod and you guessed it, a huge trout began rolling and twisting it's beautiful silvery red side flashing towards me in the 90+ degree sunlight. Once I got him out of the current and around the rock I couldn't believe the girth of this fish. I have caught alot of salmon and steelhead over the years but this fish. I have caught alot of salmon and steelhead over the years but this fish probably the finest specimin I've ever caught. By the way you may try catching this fish yourself, but he may not take a crawdad colored spinner for awhile.

Lost Lake 6-17-98 (Santium Pass OR)

No pictures with this report. Started fishing around 7:00am with near  perfect conditions. I caught one 13"er and lost a couple. The mosquitos were pretty bad. I didn't see anybody else take off their heavy sweatshirts either. There was a nice hatch of Mayflys with few if any fish rising for them. Visually, I saw few fish. It's as if the new regulations have ruined the fishing. Guess I'll have to stick with the Flyfishing Only lakes from here on out. With the poor fishing in Lost Lake I headed for the Metolius. On the way I stopped at Big Lake to get another picture from the boat ramp. It's hard to believe but the campground is still closed! Guess they figure they can make more money by opening later for the 4rth and closing earlier??

The Metolius River is as usual, one of the most beutiful places I've ever seen. Too bad there aren't more fish. I did manage a couple of Whitefish and lost a very respectable Rainbow I would estimate near 18 + inches. I headed home around four. It was temping to put back into Lost but I noticed there was nobody on the lake. Then I remembered, with the Sun going down the Mosquitos would be even worse, so I kept on going :-) Robert

Lost Lake 5-1-98 (Santium Pass OR)

My Son and I caught several nice Rainbows at Lost Lake today. They were rising for black Flying Ants. Most of the action was with hardware. My son turned lose several nice fat bows like this one Click here to see photo.   The water is lower than last year and the road in is still blocked by snow. I'm sure with todays nice weather it won't last long.  It appears the fish population is down but still substantial. Could be a very good year.  Good Luck,

Odell Lake 6-19-98

Went to Odell Lake, 6/19 thru 6/22, got there on friday morning, got to fish about 10 o'clock, trolled to all the boats that where in Shelter Cove, had several hookups, released 4 fish, 8 to 9 inchers and then figured out they where not going to get bigger. Keep some for dinner. The west wind came up about noon, made fishing a little hard, fish stop biting. Got up saturday morning and went trolling, no bites! I did manage to get 3 fish, an east wind was blowing, boy I don't like east winds. Sunday was better, did some jigging in 120' water, the fish where bigger, 8 to 12 inches. As this was my first trip there it wasn't a total bust, had a good time, weather was good and had fun jigging, it just takes a little time to figure out a new lake.

Paulina Lake

Paulina 8-27 thru 8-30-99

went fishing at paulina lake between 8-27-99 thru 8-30-99. Tried trolling dodgers, ford fenders with wedding rings and corn. seen lots of fish on fish finder but none would bite. We tried jigging and caught two fish both were in spawning color and soft. Gave up on kokanee and started fishing for browns and rainbows. We started still fishing with worms and corn. we limited out on browns and rainbows the biggest brown was 25" most averaged around 15" can't wait till next year.

Paulina Lake 8-20-99

I fished all day last Thursday and was almost skunked. but a couple of guys I know, John, who owns Paulina Lake Lodge and Trey Carskadon from "America's Outdoor Journal",caught a slew of Kokanee both trolling and jigging. Trey said that one was as nice as he ever caught.  Sitting in about 65 feet of water and going down about 40 feet with  floresent orange or pink seemed to do the trick.

This report thanks to:  Jerry Harding

Paulina Lake 7-15-99

Spent 3 days at Paulina jigging for kokanee.  Had limits every day but had to work for them.  Fishing is harder there this time of year as the fish tend to spread out, but a good fishing and a good variety of colors on jigs and a love for the sport will always get you a limit there and I released several too.  Most fish were caught at 50' to 60' on the bottom.  I saw fish from 35' to 125' and from the surface to the middle to the bottom, but had a difficult time getting them to hit my jigs.  I have a pretty good fish finder and I can see the fish and my lure on the fish screen so I can see what they are NOT responding to.  Fish were running the 13" to 15" size but caught some smaller ones which I don't usually see at Paulina.

Paulina Lake June 24 to June 27

June 24 to June 27, weather was a little iffy, snowed Thursday night, just a dusting, but the morning brought ice pellets and wind. The afternoon it cleared off and was pretty nice. That was the way it was for the time I was there, cold mornings and nice afternoons. The fishing was good, the fish where running from 12" to 14 1/2" with most in the 13" range. I was fishing with a down rigger at 30' with a wedding ring and 4/0 dodger. Some fish where being picked by jigging, the bigger fish where right on the bottom.

Paulina Lake 7-19-98 & (East Lake)

Went fishing 7/19/98 from 5:00am till 2;30pm. trolled for browns first at slide at east and caught 3 nice browns one 41/2 pounds 25", and the others on trolling 15' from bank all the way to shallow cove, on green roosters, gold blade. also trolled at 35-43 feet with flasher, dodger, and leaving my green and silver ring wedding ring 15-20 inches behind down rigger weight caught 8 kokani at east and 5 at paulina at night paulina is hotter at the evening after wind dies down reply or exchange at TH0749@aol.com.

Paulina Lake 7-11-98

My father and I fished Paulina the 11th through the 13th. In the mornings trolling between the bird houses and the red slide produced some nice kokanee. The best bite was from 6:00pm tell dark trolling between the bird houses with a orange spin-glo tipped with sented corn. We pulled limits of fish between 14 and 17 inches every night.

Paulina Lake 7-5-98

Fished at Paulina from the 7th-10th of July. The first couple of days were slow with only a few fish (kokanee) caught by trolling. 90% of the action was near the red slide and the northwest corner of the lake. Kokanee were spread out from 25-50 feet deep, however, all of the fish in my boat were caught 25-30. The secret was long leaders with worms and corn (no flashers, dodgers or gang trolls!!). Doesn't hurt to use a downrigger. Also, when you see the fish begin rising and boiling at dusk, troll a fly or light spinner way back of the boat. What a thrill to hook those same fat and fielsty kokes on the surface with only a fly! Jigging was slow(for everyone) and I did'nt hear of any browns caught (except for an 8#er at East on Thursday morning). Good luck and tight lines,  Chris Yahn

Paulina Lake 6-98

I talked to ya at Paulina in the first week of June, I was trolling most of the time, using a fly rod with lead core line 4/0 dodger and a wedding ring, I did real well with that combination. The fishing was good. Most of the fish where by Little Crater C.G.  Campground was full of snow. Weather was good. The fish are little bigger this year, running 13 to 15 inches.  Went back to Paulina 6/12 to 6/14, fishing for Kokanee was good, the fish moved to the red slide area in 15 to 30 feet of water, trolling was good, jigging is starting to pick up. Most of the snow is gone from the campground and there are a lot more people there, summer vacation season has started.    It was nice talking to ya,

Paulina Lake 7-4-97

Fished at Paulina Lake over July 4th. for 5 days.  In general it was extremely slow.  A lot of very good fishermen & women go to paulina and usually most of them do good,  but it was common to see people get either just 1 or 2 fish or no fish at all,  and a lot of them really put in some hours.  I camped at the boat dock so I talked to a lot of people.  I was able to get a 5 fish limit every day jigging buzz bombs and Nordics in about of water about 40' down,  but I've been to Paulina over a hundered times,  and I know the lake pretty well and I can tell you this:  I have never had to work so hard for fish.  There were lots of fish from 35' to 50' but they just weren't biting!
Weather was beautiful and as always I still had a great trip.

Paulina Lake 5-25-97

I was up at Paulina for Memorial Week-end and had tremendous luck with kokanee and no luck with browns.  I was able to limit on kokanee in less than two hours each day and then release.  Most fish were caught in the area near the lodge in 100' to 150' of water at an average depth of 50'.  Best AM bite but caught fish all day.  I was jigging buzz bombs and Nordics but trollers did good too.  Some people did pretty good still fishing getting some nice rrainbows.  I released several kokanee 11" to 13" and kept limits each day 14" to 16" long.

Pugeot Sound & surrounding area

We fish year round for Blackmouth (sexually inmature chinook ),resident coho, and the ocean run salmon. The only real slow time is between late april and the beginning of June.Right now the silvers are here and the chum will be next.Thens it blackmouth season ,where we really have fun.I primarily troll with downriggers all year ,except when we go to Port Townsend and I feel like getting some exercise by jigging on Mid Channel Bank.Puget Sound and the surrounding waters hold a wealth of fish just waiting for the savvy angler to find them and have some fun.

When winter comes we troll with flasher/squid combos or plugs. Also a coyote spoon has proven to be a favorite of the blackmouth. The bait shops here don't open till 7 or 8 in the winter so we pass on the bait, its frozen anyway...

Salmon River (Idaho) 8-1-98

Well I was just up on the East fork of the South fork of the Salmon river here in Idaho (50 miles east of McCall) in Yellowpine. Its all catch & release except for brookies on Johnson Creek. It was awesome.  Beautiful rainbows all over. Even managed to land a very nice Bull Trout just where Big creek enters the east fork just east of Yellowpine.I'm not very good with the flyfishing so I was just using a Panther Martin Spinner Fly Rainbow Pattern with the barbs pinched down.  Caught everything on that one lure. It was great .I'll be back.  Hopefully in late AUG. or SEPT. Best time to go is during the week . Not as many people . In fact had the rivers all to myself the whole time.  BTW Deadwood Res. is about 50 miles due south of Yellowpine and the Kokes should start running up the Deadwood River any time now.  Bye

Skagit river

Skagit River 10-10-99

I've been reading your reports and I have noticed that there is no reports ont the skagit river, so I thought I would give you a story. My wife and I headed up last weekend and enjoyed a wonderful day all around. The fishing was good and the scenery was almost as good. We only saw three boats all day and they caught there limit of silvers or very close. We were fishing from shore and my wife showed me how it was done. She could throw anything out and catch one me on the other hand had to work my ass off. In the end she had her glory and out fished me for the first and hopefully the last time. havent heard the end of her day in over a week.

Shilshole 9-27-98

Went Sat and Sun sept.26 & 27 and found the silvers reluctant after two days of heavy rain. did get a nice 13 # on a green spoon and green Hotspot flasher. Every fish we hooked hit the same spoon, and none hit herring. Fish in 35-60 feet of water at any depth of bottom early. later in the day we marked fish as deep as 380 feet! We were right off the green buoy just outside Shilshole. Went up to Edmonds oil docks, nada, and down to West Point, also nada

Snake River

Snake River 7-7-99

Fished the Snake river above Little Goose dam 7/5/99 in the afternoon and eve. Smallmouth bass fishing was excellent, with fish responding to curly tailed grubs in dark colors ( black, brown, blue, etc.). also hit a lot of fish on crawdad crank baits. Rebel crawdad a good choice. Fish broken rock areas or the ends of rip-rap banks. Fish very aggresive toward evening, and large numbers of fish in ranges from 1 to 4 lbs are available. Feel free to e-mail me for more details.

Timothy Lake 5-30-98

I noticed that the previous report I read about Timothy reminded me of the great day we had there on May 30th.  Arrived at 7:00am and fish were rising everywhere all over the lake. We started trolling right from the ramp and caught fish immediately and continuously all day long. Two of us caught 125 trout by dusk! Most were the 9-10" planters but with ultalight poles and 2# test line we had a blast. Triple Teasers RULE!

this report thanks to:  James

Timothy Lake 6-28-98

Flat lining triple teasers, hot shots, & needlefish caught 35-40 planters by two persons fishing 8am-8pm. No big ones. Was quiet and peaceful 'till the morons began ignoring the 10 MILES PER HOUR ENTIRE LAKE rule!

Timothy Lake 6-22-97

10 of us camped out and fished on sunday.  It was cold and rainy and a little windy Saturday night but calmer on Sunday.  We caught trout and kokanee all over the lake.  Trout were closer to the surface and kokes were from 25' to 40' down and only about 8" long (trout were 10" to 13").  We threw rapallas,  Mepps spinners,  panther martins and Tazmanian Devils,  and trolled wedding rings (green) all with similar luck although the Tazmanian Devil in the red & white (bloody ripper model) worked the best.  Also had limited success on jigging buzz bombs and nordics for kokes.

Tillamook Area 10-25-98

Went to the Wilson/Trask last weekend(10/25/98). Nothing happening! Saw some dark fish come in with the tides but no biters at the Tillamook hospital hole. Went up to loren's drift, some darkys in the holes but the water is too low and clear and nothing coming up with the tides. Wilson River is about in the same shape. Very low and clear. Large, dark chinook were rolling all over the place but no biters. WE Need RAIN!!! It seems funny in Oregon in October but, it is too dry! The bay is kicking out some good fish on the tide changes but not enough to justify hauling a boat down there until a few storms come in(maybe this weekend).  As an aside, I fish about 200 days a year on the Sandy/Clackamas system and this year has been dismal!Tight Lines!

Tillamook Area 9-19-98

Tillamook has been producing some excellent catches over the last week. John Winters had 3 nice chinook in the 30lb. range yesterday by 10:30. The wind came up on the bay and blew everyone off by 11:00.  Spinners have been the ticket in the upper bay so far (#7 cascade blades) but don't forget your Kwikfish with a sardine rap. Kwikfish work best on a heavy running incoming tide. The bubble fishery has been very consistent , Terry Mulkey has been taking two to four fish daily along the south jetty with purple label herring. The first big rain will bring a big push of fish into the rivers. Look for the Trask to be the first river to put out fish. Back bouncing eggs or kwikfish will make for an awesome day of fishing after the first rain. For up to the minute reports on coastal fisheries you can call Fisherman's Marine and Outdoor in Oregon City (503)557-3313 or Portland (503)283-0044.

Umatilla River 6-7-97

fished the upper reaches of the Umatilla ---regulations are catch & release (no bait/just your smarts),caught fifty+ rainbow trout in 2 hours on a #16 elk hair caddis fly. Makes a fun place to fish for small native RB's, in a few years (no poachers allowed) we should have a great fishery here. 6/7-- water was crystal clear, & 53 degrees F.

Willamette  2-12-98

Well here it is the 9th of Feb 98, and the fishing is dim.  Went to Meldrum Bar tonight around the bulk head, report is that there were three fish caught this morning up till noon and one lost. I put in at 3:00pm fished till 6:00pm, with three other guys and not even a bite. One nice thing though we watched a steelie returning back to the sea, it came out of the water twice (dark), but making a big splash.  I heard today on the news that the regs for the Rouge River is (One fish per day, and no more than five for the season. To bad. Thats supposed to be a real strong run down there to.

Well went fishing again today at Meldrum Bar 22Jan 98, and here is the scoop. I talked to three reliable scources. Yesterday 21 Jan 98, there were quite a few fish caught, eight were hooked and one landed on the north side of the bulk head this was in the morning. At the bulk head there were two fish caught one at 8:00 am and the other at 8:30, both by the same guy (Charlie). In the evening there were two more fish caught between 3:00/4:00pm, both by the same individual. Today 22 Jan 98, in the morning there were two fish on and lost. I stayed till 5:30pm fishing and caught one 7lb steelie at 5:00pm. There was a 14lb caught today at Meldrum around one or so, big female legal

Went fishing on the Williamette yesterday evening at meldrum. We saw one fish lost and we lost one ourselves. Its been a while since my boy cought anything and he got so excited that he had one he gave it a second jerk and broke the line. BOO HOO.Anyway I hear that there getting about half dozen a day down there. Some say the best is the morning bite others say the evening we lost ours in the evening, guess its best when the fish are there.

West Medical Lake 5-15-98

I caught a 14" Rainbow on Power Bait while still fishing from a boat on West Medical Lake in Eastern Washington on May 8th. Also caught three other fish; the smallest at 11.5". A man floated by wet fly fishing, and said that he had probably caught and released about 30(!). We saw him catch 3 in about 15 minutes. Fishing there is good.

Wenas Lake

Wenas Lake 5-12-99

Fishing has been really good on the Wenas Lake since the beginning. of March. The 61 acre lake is a private irrigation lake 16 miles North of Selah, open to the public. It is full now and the public launch is busy most of the time on the week ends. Boaters are pretty good about respecting the 5 mile speed limit. The top fish on the prize board hoping for the $100.00 is 8 1/4 pound. Second place is 7 pounds. The rumor is that the record fish will come out of the Wenas Lake this year. With the mild winter we experienced the Shiner (small natural bait fish native to the lake) population is up and the Trout are really hungry. People come into the store and the restaurant all the time talking about the fish that are being caught daily. There is even a rumor that there was a 8 pound, 18 inch, Channel Cat caught by the dam about a week ago. Fish and Wildlife department has already stocked the lake three times this season in addition to the 47,000 they planted just before winter. There was a really large one that pulled out of the hand of a disappointed fisherman. It was estimated to be around 12 pounds. No net, line broke, bummer! For information about the restaurant or campground you may contact me at Pnkfzz@aol.com.

Trask Wilson 11-6-98

11-6-98 My uncle hit the Trask with a fly-rod, going for Chinook. Saw some Darkies rolling and hooked a nice 5-lb. early winter Steelhead by surprise.  Said we need a good rain for them to come in. Level was fishable already,  however. Brandon Landis

Trask Wilson 5-1-98

Best bet for returning spring chinook-----not much action yet though-----small return expected this year
