The Story of MacWombat Press

We began quietly in Beauty and the Beast fandom, back in 1989. Linda had been writing fanfiction for several years, and Lucy had been dabbling in those black arts as well.

Upon publication of one of Linda's B&B stories in Kathy Cox's Destiny series, Linda suggested to Lucy that "maybe we should do our own zine" - the emphasis being JUST ONE. *sigh* How were we to know?

Our press grew like topsy, and on top of everything else, we won some awards for our efforts.

Here's Lucy with a few of her awards.

And here's Linda with one of her several.

(If you're interested in knowing which zines are winners, they're listed next to the zine's description.)

Anyway, not long after, we decided to branch off into other avenues and genres, and thus we added Zorro, Quantum Leap, Lois & Clark, and The X Files to our family. We soon followed with Phantom of the Opera and The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, based on the 1947 movie and the television show which ran from 1968-1970.

Next there came the science fiction romance genre.  In the summer of 2000, we added horror to our list of accomplishments.   In 2001 we published our first Buffy, the Vampire Slayer zine.  Two years later saw us publish our pre-quel to the movie Ladyhawke.

Newest to our "family" is a wonderfully written series of zines based on the movie Pirates of the Caribbean, written by the award-winning P. S. Nim.

Now, one question that is always being asked of us is "How did you come up with your name?" Actually, it's quite simple. It's all Linda's fault. You see, Lucy loves to collect unusual and expensive stuffed animals. No . . . not taxidermied ones! The sweet, soft, and cuddly ones you get in toy stores. And of the oddest ones in her menagerie is a rather large but oh-so-adorable wombat that we refer to as Wonder Wombat.

At the time, we were also publishing the old fashioned way off of Lucy's Macintosh computer. So, when the time came when we were trying to figure out what to call ourselves, we were in the midst of a barrage of fellow zine editors who were calling their press names things which were related directly to B&B: crystals and roses and tunnels and lions, etc. We didn't want to be known by a similar logo; we wanted something that would stick out. Something that people wouldn't forget. Hmm . . . Macintosh computer - wombats - Mac - wombat . . . .

GOT IT!

Nowadays we're using a PC for all our editing and writing needs, but our name still sets us apart. And Wonder Wombat accompanies us to all of the conventions we attend.

Now . . . where do we go from here? Who knows. Whatever strikes our fancy, I would imagine. We write for the love of the genre. So there's no telling what you may see on this website in the future. But we can tell you this: Lucy still loves stuffed animals, Dr. Who, and Sherlock Holmes, and Linda still dabbles in all sorts of sci/fi and romance.

The End (but not quite!)
