Madeira Island lies in the Atlantic Ocean, about 650 km (400 miles) off the coast of Morocco. Although it is small—only about 58 km long by 24 km wide—it is very steep, with mountains over 1,800 meters high.
The nearby island of Porto Santo, with a very long golden sand beach, is the only other inhabited island in the archipelago. In addition, there are the three small Desertas and the even smaller Selvagens.
