Description of website: A place to research, archive and share genealogy information about the Ohnmeiss family name.
Updated monthly.

Some variations of this name are:

  • Ohnmeiss
  • Ohnmeis
  • Ohnmais
  • Ohmneis
  • Ohmnies
  • Ohmeis
  • Ohnmeiß (This is the German spelling. The "ß" is the German letter for the hard "S" sound.)

Welcome to my genealogy page. I have been researching the Ohnmeiss family name since 1975 and have accumulated much information about the people with this surname. The goal of this website is to share information about the research. I am hoping that you are a visitor who discovered this site from one of the many internet search engines out there.   The bulk of the research originates from Clinton county and Lycoming county, Pennsylvania, United States of America.  I also have information regarding the descendants of Daniel OHNMEISS and his wife Clara Anna WREN from Jamestown, North Dakota.  The Ohnmeiss families of New York state  and Ohio have also been big contributors to this web site.  And of course, let us not forget where it all began . . . Wangen, Germany.  There will be some genealogy information about our Ohnmeiss ancestors across the Atlantic Ocean too. Note: Wangen is the small suburb of Stuttgart (Würtemberg) not to be confused with Wangen in the bavarian Allgäu.

I will be adding to this website on a monthly basis.  You will notice, that I have kept the number of graphic images and Java scripts/applets to a minimum so that your down load time is minimized. The site began in the Fall of 1998. Years 1999 and 2000 have been removed as references to save space. Search engines could uncover these earlier Ohnmeiss web pages.  There have been suggestions to have multiple pages (e.g. Photos, Announcements, Links, etc.). A survey conducted in the Fall of 2000 indicated that many of you wanted the existing format to remain. Everything, for the year is on one page. The most current month is near the top and the first month entered (e.g. January) is at the bottom.  You will just need to scroll down through the document.  Most of it is narrative with some photographs interspersed.

Some of the associated names that I've encountered in my research are:

  • BRUNGARD/BRUNGART, Sophia; b. 24 June 1851 d. 23 March 1931. 1  [w/o Henry Wren.]

The following is from the Williamsport Sun-Gazette newspaper, March 23, 2008, Lifestyle section, p. E4.  The newspaper article included a photograph of the couple.  Cameron E. Fike is the son of of Beverly Mae (Ohnmeiss) Fike and Paul Fike, Sr.  His mother was the daughter of Raymond Ohnmeiss.

Fikes observe 30th anniversary

Mr. and Mrs. Cameron E. Fike, Williamsport, observed their 30th wedding anniversary March 18, 2008.  They were married by the Rev. Ray W. HEINRICH OHNMEISS -- RESEARCH BETWEEN 2003 AND 2008

Date:    Feb. 19, 2008
From:    Helmut Zondler
In your web page you had the following text, which came up in a Google search:

"Helmut Zondler e-mailed the following information to me on Thursday, 9 October 2003. Helmut was wondering if anyone has done any research of the Hochberg church records regarding ..."

In the last months I tried to find out some more about the
Heinrich Ohnmeiss b. 9 Dec. 1836 in Ludwigsburg, who emigrated to America; application date May 1854. He is mentioned somewhere in your older web pages. I tried to find him in the Mormon-films Hochberg and also Aldingen. These places are close to Ludwigsburg and also Stuttgart. He is not in these records. It says however at immigration that he was born in Ludwigsburg. To search in Ludwigsburg is a major job, because there are several churches in Ludwigsburg to search the records, and I will not continue. I am however confident that there is the solution. I still think he is of the Hochberg branch because of the vicinity of places.

In searching Hochberg and Aldingen films I found descendants of Johann Jacob Ohnmeiss (# 525255 in tree). These are not in the printed tree. His son Jacob Albrecht is not from a marriage; the pastor wrote "Spur" at birth. I send you a FTW file separate. In it please look into all the sources and also notes for more detailed information. Parts are in English, parts in German. If you need translations please ask.

Höpfigheim is taken from the Ohnmeiss tree, and I don't know the exact source for that. It might be that Jacob Albrecht b. 1969 had children in Höpfigheim; he was 40 years old at marriage in 1770!  Is Heinrich b. 1836 somehow from there? I will not continue searches in Höpfigheim. It might be a good lead however. The Mormons have the films:

SCHROYER - OHNMEISS  RESEARCH

From:                Helmut Zondler
Date:                January 3, 2008
Subject:            Schroyer / Ohnmeiss Genealogy

A Happy New Year and my best wishes for it!
After a long time I just looked at your web site Dec. 2007. There you have the answer to your question about Charles Schroyer. I remembered the name Schroyer and just looked up my genealogy file. I found Charles there too. It might be a year or two, when Marjorie Hutchinson and I looked a bit into that family which is linked to the Ohnmeiss.

Charles Schroyer is in the censuses 1900 and 1910 as the son of Jonathan and Emma. The census 1900 has his month and year of birth.
Jonathan's father is George. He is in the censuses 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880. Note the different spellings! Marge did a very good job finding all that!
I don't know whether you have all these censuses. I just wanted to be sure you have the information.
The 1880 census in your web page has a Jonathan Schroyer age 54 and therefore born about 1826. He must be related to George or Jonathan. He can't be the Jonathan married to Emma Ohnmeiss. Also his wife is Christina.
Best regards,
Helmut.
Dates in file are day, month, year.

FOLLOW-UP INFORMATION ABOUT MINNIE OHNMAIS

From:  Kay Jackson
January 4, 2008
I noted your inquiry regarding Minnie Ohnmais. I am her grand niece and do have lots of information concerning her.  Some of the information you listed was wrong.  She married Fred Francis Ohnmais.  Her maiden name was Dick.  I’m not sure of any “misspelling” of her married name.  This is the name I’ve always known, and is the name listed on official documents I have in my possession.  I would be very happy to hear back from you and provide specific information you are seeking.
Sincerely,
Kay Jackson

Here is the information I have. Wilhelmina “Minnie” (Dick) Ohnmais was born in Villa Ridge, Illinois, July 28, 1886. She married Fred Francis Ohnmais March 2, 1910. Fred was the son of Frederick Ohnmais (born in unknown town in Germany) and Dorothea Adams of Gainsburg, Germany. I don't know when they immigrated to the US. Fred's birthdate is 10/15/1880. I have a picture of him as a young man posing with his mother and his step-father, Herman Marsh. I believe they lived in Troy, Missouri. Fred worked as a "tinner" for the Illinois Central Railroad. He and Minnie owned a farm in Southern Illinois. Fred died of throat cancer March 15, 1943. Both Fred and Minnie are buried in Friedens United Church of Christ Cemetery in Moscow Mills, Missouri. Minnie and Fred had no children, but raised my father Kenneth Lowel McDaniel born 7/4/1919 in Olmstead, Illinois. Minnie was his aunt. Minnie moved to Washington state in the 1950's to be near Ken's family. Minnie loved Mt. Rainier and worked as the laundress at Paradise Inn in Mt. Rainier National Park until well after her 80th birthday. She retired to the home she owned in Tacoma, Washington. She died in Tacoma on December 24, 1975 of cancer. She was 89 years old at the time of her death.

Thanks so much for getting back to me. If you have additional information on Fred or Minnie, I would love to receive it. Best wishes, Kay Jackson
