Progress in Irish - Lesson 55 Do not aspirate the regular verbs, not in the negative (with níor), not as relative forms (with "a" or "ar"), and do not use a d' prefix. And there is no eclipse or aspiration after "an" or "ar" the interrogative particles. Those irregular verbs, though. They just have to be different, don't they! Some of the irregular verbs are permanently lenited; but "ní" eclipses "fuarthas". Note the verbs that lenite after "ní": facthas, dearnadh., but not dúradh. The only way to get used to this is to say them out loud: a waches?,nee aches; a woorhes?, nee woorhes; a doorah?, nee dooreh: a nyerneh, nee yerneh. I learned to prefix an "h" to those that began with a vowel. She does not use the prefix h here. This past tense is used more often than any other tense or mood of the saorbhriathar. There will be more practice with the tenses in the next lesson. 1. Briseadh na huibheacha. |
