Selfless Elves

There is an elf in each of us;
An impish, prankster side
That loves to see other humans
With mouths open and eyes wide.
You know you've worn a silly grin,
When first you got an inkling
Of misfortune for some hapless soul,
And I'll bet your eyes were twinkling.
It's too bad we're so elfless,
It makes us seem more selfless;
At least, we're thinking of others,
Spinning our webs for the helpless.
I wonder if that side of us
Couldn't be used more often;
The nightly news would be more fun
If they did it from a coffin;
And what about the car salesmen?
They're already comic relief;
Forget about the suit and tie,
Shoot the commercials in their briefs.
Make bra commercials educational,
Show men how to undo them;
Men wouldn't change the channels so much
If they just had more to them.
That side of me writes the best poems,
As far as I'm concerned;
Though, often, they make no sense at all
And wind up getting burned.
That is my favorite side of me,
I could be Elvish forever;
But, sometimes, I have gone too far
And seen inclement weather.
The best part of having that side of me,
Eyes twinkling all the while,
Is keeping people on their toes,
Because I always wear that smile.
