Magazine ArticlesIn the 1980s and early 90s I decided I wanted to change the world by writing a series of magazine articles. Well, I succeeded at least in writing some articles. All of the articles below appeared in a national magazine in one form or another. I found out that when getting an article published, you are at the mercy of an editor. A magazine editor can at will: insert or delete words, completely change what was said, or in one instance rewrite the article and sign someone else's name. All of this has happened to me, however, all the articles presented here are in the original form in which I submitted. Some of these articles will appear dated and probably humorous while others have applications which are still relevant. My best, and most enduring effort are the three articles I wrote on how I built my home studio. Copies of that article have been requested and sent out all over the USA and also Canada. Some Tips Toward More Effective Practice Published in Modern Drummer, March 1986
MIDI And The Percussion Teacher Published in Modern Drummer, July 1988
Desigining and
Building a Home Studio: From A Drummer's
Perspective , Rhythm, October,
November, December 1989, January 1990 (Appeared as "So You
Want A Drum-Proof Studio?"). This is a series of articles
which describe the entire process of designing and building
my home studio, complete with lots of pictures, diagrams,
plans, etc.
Interview With Mike Myers Published in Experience Music, Summer 1994, Volume II, No. 3.
Dealing With Music Dealers "sort of" published in a well known drum magazine, September 1991. This controversial article was accepted for publication but appeared as a rewritten version of what I submitted, minus my name in the byline. ...Ahem!?!!?? This, combined with the fact that this same publication took over the other two major competing drum magazines of the era (Drums, Drummers and Drumming, and Rhythm) and put them out of publication meant that I wasn't in the drum magazine article writing business anymore.
Dealing With Unruly Audience Members Goldmine, March 8, 1991. This is not an article, per se, but is a letter/editorial which was published in Goldmine. If I had my way, this would be required reading for all patrons attending any live concert where I am in the audience.
