Darin Tysdal (born 1965)composer, Pianist, and Conductor I am originally from the Fargo-Moorhead area and I now live in Minneapolis. My Bachelor's Degree is from Moorhead State University and my Masters is from Northwestern University. My major instrument is the piano, and I have played tuba in many bands and wind ensembles. I studied piano with Linda Ferriera, Earnest Harris, Nancy Harris, and presently Gary Sipes at MacPhail School of Music, Minneapolis, MN. I have participated in piano masterclasses with Lars Vogt, Gilbert Kalish, and Victor Rosenbaum. I studied composition with Roger Solie, Henry Gwiazda, Daniel Breedon, M. William Karlins, Paul Koonce, Michael Pizaro, and Robert Maderich III. I have participated in composition masterclasses with Ned Rorem, Marta Ptazynska, T.J. Anderson, Aaron Jay Kernis, John Rutter, and Ben Johnston. I studied conducting with Johnathan May, John Tesch, Vernal Richardson, Huw Edwards, and David Ferriera. I conduct musical shows throughout the Twin Cities area. They include "Man of La Mancha", "Hair","Do Black Patent Leather Shoes Really Reflect Up?","The Mikado","The Pirates of Penzance","Oliver!","Fiddler on the Roof",and "Anything Goes". Presently I am the Music Director of the Linden Hills Chamber Orchestra. We had our first concert on December 3rd and we did the Oberon Overture by Weber, Two arias from Don Giovanni and one from Marriage of Figaro with James Wintle as soloist, Movements 2 and 3 from the Mendelssohn Symphony No.4 and the Romance No.2 for Violin and Orchestra by Beethoven with Rick Stockton as soloist. Our next concerts will be in April which will include the first movement of the Schumann Symphony No.4, Mozart Horn Concerto No.2 (with David Weber from the Metropolitan Symphony), Alan Hovahnaess' Prayer of St. Gregory (with Jack Zimmerscheid, trumpeter from the LHCO), Richard Strauss Serenade for Winds Op.8, and Larry Daehn's As Summer Was Just Beginning (Song for James Dean).We played a pops concert at the Lake Harriet Band Shell where we played everything from Dvorak Slavonic Dances to selections from "Annie".Our next concert will be at Southwest High School, 43rd and Chowen in Minneapolis. The program includes Overture to the Royal Fireworks by Handel, Trumpet Concerto in E-Flat by Hummel (with John Koopman, first chair trumpet with the Minnesota Opera Orchestra as soloist), and Beethoven Symphony No.1. We also hope to do the Bach Brandenburg Concerto No.4 with Carolyn Liptak, violin and Claudia Schnittker and John Petroff, flutes and the Brahms Serenade No.1 in D, Op.11 for our next concerts in April at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Bloomington and the Church of the Annunciation in Minneapolis. On March 28,1999 I was soloist with the Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, William Intrilligator, Conductor in Ravel's Piano Concerto in D for the Left Hand. We also will do a concert with the three Romeo and Juliet's: Berlioz, Prokofiev and Tchaikovsky. I play keyboards with the orchestra. Our last concert included Fountains of Rome by Respighi and Carmina Burana by Carl Orff. Our next concert includes Prokofiev's Scythian Suite and Barber's Cello Concerto (with Joe Johnson from the Minnesota Orchestra as soloist) plus Barber's Overture to the School for Scandal. For the past few summers we have played for the Minnesota Ice Symphony at the Ice Gardens in Minneapolis. I can be seen on cable channel #15 in the Twin Cities area playing with the Dakota Valley Pops Orchestra, Steve Ramsey conducting. I recently performed with them for a Halloween concert. My Overture Buffo for Orchestra will be premiered on March 6,2000 with Steve Ramsey conducting the Dakota Valley Civic Orchestra. Concerto for Alto Saxophone and String Orchestra was read by the Plymouth Music Series, Phillip Brunelle,Conductor and David Pituch, Saxophone, as part of the American Composer's Forum Orchestral Reading Project. My "Serenity Prayer" for SATB choir has been read at the Twin Cities' Church Musician's Assosiation new music reading session. It will be sung by the Wayzata Women's Chorus next year. I can be seen playing piano for "The Full Santy" at Stevie Ray's Comedy Cabaret in Minneapolis (located at the old Dudley Riggs on Hennepin Avenue). I also was assistant music director for Anoka-Ramsey Community College's production of "Nunsense"! There will be an upcoming piano recital (which I will give dates later) which will include Beethoven Sonata No.13 in E Flat Op.27 No.1, Scriabin Sonata No.4, Bach Prelude and Fugue from WTC I in A Minor, Ravel Alborada del Grazioso, and 4 Preludes and 2 Etudes-Tableaux by Rachmaninov. In 1997 I won an audition for the Honors Recital at MacPhail center for the arts. I played Copland's Piano Variations. I have been reviewed in the Minneapolis Star-Tribune for my first piano recital of all encores from 1994. I have played many other recitals in the Twin Cities area at many churches such as Minnehaha United Church of Christ, Church of St. Mark, Christ the King Lutheran, Richfield United Methodist Church, and Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. I have played in the Swing Beat Big Band, Good News Big Band, and the Rod Smith Orchestra. We have played many dances and weddings. I married Lynda Hegge on May 28, 1998 at Christ the King Lutheran Church. We reside at the Heritage Square Apartments at 1000 East 78th Street Apt 8 in Richfield, MN 55423. We have a cat named Louis after Louis Prima. |
