Here is what I made for my granddaughter
for a Valentine( Fig 1.)
<---
Fig. 2 Inside
The front has a heart cut out of a color complementing the cardstock. This is topped with a paper lace heart that has 1/8" ribbon threaded through it and tied in a bow at the top. A smaller heart of the same dark color is glued on top of the paper lace heart, and graphics of a floral wreath and a cupid were glued on top of that. Before assembling, I cut the card, using a template made on PrintArtist, and folded it in half.
Here's how I did it:
You need
An 8 1/2 x 11 inch piece of card stock
a piece of a contrasting paper, gift wrap,
or whatever you like.
A paper lace heart (or square or whatever
you like)
A yard of 1/8" ribbon
several graphics (Cupids, Flowers, etc)
Tacky glue
A glue stick and a brush for the tacky
glue is nice but not necessary.
First, I made a valentine planner
(figure 3)
, using PrintArtist
graphics. The heart is placed off-center. A line locates the center of
the card (for making the inside of the card) and there is a line locating
the center of the heart. The planner is a jpg file you can print or copy
and re-size to use in your own card-maker.
I printed two copies to use the heart as
a pattern for cutting out the darker paper for the front of the heart and
to place the cut that makes the front of the card.
The planner I used in PrintArtist--I centered
the verse using the center line on the heart. I placed all the graphics
and text (Figure 4)
Then
I deleted the planner, leaving only the text and graphics that I wanted
to print. A variation is to use the planner for patterns to cut contrasting
colors for the inside of the card. (Figure 2)
Print the card at this point. You can't do it after you cut or fold.
Folding the card: Put the planner on the card stock. Use a ruler and a dead pen to trace the fold line above and below the heart on the center-card line. Since you are doing this on the planner, it shouldn't matter if the pen suddenly comes back to life. Then trace the part of the heart that is to the right of the center-card line with the dead pen. Put the card stock on a cutting surface (I used my rotary cutter mat for this.) and cut only the heart part of the fold line. Fold the card and you should have a basic shape just like the one in figure 1--the Valentine.
The front of my card was made with stiffened fabric for the contrasting color. Any paper, gift wrap, card stock, whatever will do.) I cut out a large heart using the planner pattern. I cut out a smaller heart made from a paper pattern made by-guess-and-by-golly--a teeny bit larger than the heart wreath I was going to put on the card.
I used a Hallmark Lace heart and a yard
of 1/8" ribbon (You can get away with a smaller amount--say 30"). Threaded
the ribbon started at the top, and tied the remainder in a bow when I got
to the other side. (Figure 5)
I found out that:
(1) It is really easier to cut the ribbon
at an angle and use a little tacky glue to stiffen the point.
(2) Hands not accustomed to this work
do much better if you leave 2 paper hearts stuck together for strength.
(3) No matter what you do, the paper will
break somewhere anyhow--just keep on going--you are going to glue the whole
thing to the card and the break will not show.
Graphics came from a scanned Love stamp
(the wreath) and a Cupid from PrintArtist. I printed them on coated paper
to get a really good print. I cut them out on the back of my rotary cutter's
mat with a #11 craft knife with a new blade. I have no patience with teeny
scissors that my thumb gets stuck in.
(4) Because I used a whole sheet of card stock, my card was an odd
size and I had to make an envelope. What to do? I bought Tyvek
envelopes at Walgreens, the 9x11 jobbies, measured the card and marked
the envelope allowing an inch to foldd over at the bottom. Cut the
envelope off at that point, used strapping tape to tape the bottom of the
envelope closed. Printed the envelope -- after much struggle (won't
do that again!!!!)--and there ya go.

you forget to remove it, the mail won't go.
