Our history at First Parish

The First Parish in Malden, Universalist, is the oldest faith community in the City of Malden. We gathered in 1648 and incorporated with the town on May 2, 1649.  The current building of First Parish is its fifth meeting house. It was completed in 1909 during the ministry of the Rev. Dr. Richard Eddy Sykes (1904-1919), who became President of St. Lawrence University following his service at First Parish.

On May 14, 1972, the First Parish in Malden and the First Universalist Society of Everett (founded July 8, 1869) merged to carry forward the witness of these two former churches. In 1998, First Parish celebrated its 350th year anniversary; in 1999, the City of Malden celebrated their 350th year anniversary and First Parish played an important role in the Malden Parade. First Parish currently stands as a prominent gothic, brownstone church in the City of Malden . The church itself forms the shape of a cross. The interior of the church proudly displays beautiful stained glass windows and a large sanctuary complete with a pipe organ.

First Parish is a covenanted liberal Christian, Unitarian Universalist congregation with an openness to the wisdom of the great religions of the world. The congregation is an active member of the Unitarian Universalist Association.  To learn more about our loving and caring community, please join us for worship and religious education on Sunday mornings at 10:30 am or contact the First Parish office or the Rev. David M. Horst, Minister.
