Unlike America, where the movie initially received poor reviews, JG has always been much admired in France.
Enthusiastic French critics (among them:
Francois Truffaut) were almost solely responsible for resurrecting JG's critical reputation in the late 1950's.   A
poll of critics in 1966 rated JG the greatest Western film of all time.
A "Film Novel" of JG (left, 11" x 13"), with the storyline made up of B&W frames captured from the film, was published in France in 1960 . . .
