History The HUMMER began in 1979 when many companies compeated for the development of the Army's new High Mobility Muti-Purpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV). AM General made a prototype called HUMVEE and went to test it in the Nevada desert in July 1980. After being selected to pass the first round of tests, the HUMVEE was sent to a five-month test period with the Army and two other vehicles. After the test were compleated, it was decided that the HUMVEE was the best possible vehicle for the job. Then, in 1983, AM General Corporation began the manufacturing of the HUMVEE. In 1992, they introduced their civilian version, dubbed HUMMER.
