My name is Maranda Rose Forstall. I had a sister Bridget, who became an Angel before I was born, and now my parents have been told that I too suffer from the same disease that she had. The doctors were not sure what Bridget had, but since that time have decided that it was a form of genetic disease that resembles SMA in that my nervous system is slowly being destroyed. In order to help, the doctors need to find out which of my genes are missing or damaged and hopefully "repair or replace" the gene, or artificially supply the missing functions the gene is supposed to do if possible. The cost of this can be staggering to think about as it costs about $175 per gene. Of course not all the genes need to be looked at since the doctors know that certain areas control certain things, but it will still be very expensive to find my specific deletions or mutations so they can try to help me. Very few families could afford such expense, and not only are my parents trying to help me, but to help others who may be in the same or similar situations. They have set up a foundation to collect donations to fund the study of this particular disease.

At 9:43 PM Maranda quietly passed away.
November 16, 2001 At 3:30 pm Utah time I just spoke to Dr. Swoboda, who's the head doctor in Maranda's case, she called to let us all know that Maranda has ARDS (Acute Respritory Distress Syndrome), she will not survive this. Please pray for the family as they are going to have to remove support tonight. Pray that they may be comforted. |
