Query

I have heard for many years that my great-grandmother Rose-Anna St. Jean was a Metis. From the Genealogy of the Ouimet family that I have put together so far, it does not seem to be from the Ouimet side of the family. Therefore, it's probably from the St. Jean side of the family if this rumor is true.

Was Jules a Metis? Was Marie Lafrance a Metis? This is not likely since they lived were born and lived in Quebec for years before coming to Manitoba.

Maybe it was Francois-Xavier's wife, Marie Proteau who was a Metis? Again, the Proteau family came from Quebec also.

It's possible that this story is simply not true. They lived in a Metis community in the 1880's. Maybe they just adopted the language and customs of the Metis living there, and people assumed a generation later that they were Metis.

Can anyone shed any light on this?
