Collecting puzzles

Hello, thank you for visiting our antique wooden jigsaw puzzle collecting web page.

"We are a family of wooden jigsaw puzzle collectors, and actively purchase quality wooden puzzles from people who are selling them. We will buy one puzzle, ten puzzles and complete lots of dozens of puzzles.

We created this page in the hopes of reaching other people interested in old "hand cut" wooden jigsaw puzzles. If you have any of these old puzzles, and are interested in talking to us about the history behind them, feel free to do so. We are happy to meet other jigsaw puzzle enthusiasts, especially wooden puzzle enthusiasts. We also buy these old puzzles for our personal collection. In some cases we do re-sell or trade a few puzzles.

In addition to buying old wooden puzzles from people looking to sell them, we are also interested in just getting to know others who share our appreciation for them. We (Mark Mostly) have developed a contact network of some very wonderful people who are quite in tune with the history behind these old wooden jigsaw puzzles. Many of us even visit with each other, and get together from time to time as a group to meet, as well as swap or sell puzzles to each other. A great place for this is the AGPC. (Association of Game and Puzzle Collectors) of which we are members.

Should you be looking to sell an old wooden puzzle or more, we are ALWAYS looking to buy good puzzles. Primarily "PAR" as well as "Pastime" puzzles that are in good to very good condition. We will always consider other makers too, however PAR and Pastime puzzles are at the moment are our main focus point. We prefer to buy puzzles in Lots... but individual sales are fine too.

What puzzle makers are we interested in collecting? Here is a list with approximate pricing information, and comments.

These puzzles were very intricately cut, but are highly prone to damage of broken and chipped knobs.

FAO Schwartz

1950s
  • 8¢ - If Complete and in excellent condition with original box.
  • 4¢ - If missing 1-3 pieces and in very good condition with original box.
  • ZERO (0) value if more than 3 pieces are missing or in poor condition.
Slightly above average for a Strauss Cut puzzle. It is a shame that Strauss did not pay more attention to quality. FAO Schwartz is better than the Strauss Brand puzzle, but still a far cry from being a good puzzle.

  • 15¢ - If missing 1-2 pieces and in very good condition with original box.

A very good puzzle, usually commissioned to be made by Pastime puzzles, however the puzzles are usually well worn.

Most other Cutters

1880
to
1970

Generally 10¢ per puzzle piece if the puzzle is complete, and if the name of the cutter can be determined, and an original storage box is available in good condition.

Generally 5¢ per puzzle piece if the puzzle is missing 1-2 pieces, and if the name of the cutter can be determined, and an original storage box is available in good condition.

Generally 5¢ per puzzle piece if the puzzle is complete, but the cutter name can not be determined, or no original storage box is available

Generally 2¢ per puzzle piece if the puzzle is missing 1-2 pieces, but the cutter name can not be determined, or no original storage box is available.

Generally the pricing to the left is the standard, however there are some "no name" cutters that did cut puzzles that "may" warrant higher values.

Such an instance can only be determined by seeing a CLEAR picture of the completed jigsaw puzzle, with the cut lines being completely visible. Unless this is provided, the puzzle will be assumed to be a general "no name" cut.

E-mail me the information listed below, and we can talk about price. These puzzles can be too broad scaled to post any specific pricing here.

Provide ALL of the following information in your correspondence about wanting to sell puzzles, or have it ready BEFORE you call. If you have more than one puzzle, please prepare this information for every puzzle. Thank you.

  • Puzzle maker's name ( Company name or Person )
  • Puzzle title(s)
  • Number of pieces in the Puzzle(s)
  • Year that the puzzle was cut, if known. ( This should be notated on the Box, Not from the image! -- Image dates are almost always only the Artist's Copyright date. )
  • Condition of the puzzle(s) - ( Paper missing, tears, stains, broken nubs, chewed by dog, silverfish damage, foxing, missing pieces... etc. )
  • Condition of the puzzle box(s) ( Stains, rips, split corners, taped, missing lids, chewed by cat, pen markings...etc. )
  • Any additional markings or items of interest that you think I should know in determining my interest in your puzzles. ( Name or number of puzzle cutter, Inspector, Artists Name, polished by ... etc. )

Phone: 1-860-873-3093, or Email Address:, as it is also very likely that we may be interested in buying them.

We will consider buying a puzzle that has a missing piece or two. However we emphasize that the overall actual condition of the puzzle must be at a minimum "very good". Jigsaw Puzzles with severe damage, or extensive missing pieces have no value, and are not of interest to us, unless they would be thrown away. We would be happy to accept them as a donation, along with the purchase of any other valuable puzzles. Who knows... someday Mark might want to try to repair them, or donate them to a local community center.

If you have such old puzzles tucked away in your attic, and you might possibly be looking to sell them please feel free to give us a call.

Even if you want to talk about puzzles in general, and you are not selling them, please call us at: 1-860-873-3093 Thank you.

Additionally, we are looking for puzzles that are in the 100 to 1500+ piece range, as we are hoping to build up a collection that is large enough to create a public display of my puzzles for free exhibit to the general public, at local libraries, and places of interest where the patrons would possibly find these wonderful wooden puzzles interesting to gaze at in wonderment. This may also broaden visitors horizons to know a little more about this long lost art form and very enjoyable pastime.
