We have read three major novels in this class. Each has been unique in it's own way.
Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston. 1937. This is a story of a girl named Janie who struggles to find herself and define her life through her relationships with men, all to find out that it is her own thoughs and ideas that make her the woman that she is. This story is interesting and exciting. Hurston really invites you to take a look into your own life through the character of Janie. Recommendation - Highly Recommend
Beloved by Toni Morrison. 1987. The ghostly tale of a woman who is haunted by her past, as well as the pressure that race brings to her everyday life. A family tries to deal with life, death and racism. Recommendation - Recommended
Philadelphia Fire by John Edgar Wideman. 1990. This is a story of a man. He's is confused. Readers are confused. This book should have just been called Confusion. Recommendation - How can I recommend it? I didn't understand it! |
