Col. Alfred Torbert

The 15th New Jersey was mustered into service on August 29, 1862. Trained at Camp Fair Oaks in Flemington, NJ (near the present day Flemington Fairgrounds) they became part of the 1st New Jersey Brigade commanded by Colonel Alfred Torbert. The brigade was comprised of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th and 15th NJ regiments and was part of the First Division - 6th Corps Army of the Potomac.

The regiment saw action at Fredricksburg, Salem Church, Wilderness - Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, Petersburg and Sheridan's Valley Campaign. During the battle of the Wilderness the regiment lost nearly 300 men, 116 of them at Spotsylvania's "Bloody Angle". The 15th is ranked highest in the number of fatal casualities of any NJ Civil War regiment and is number 12 on the list out of all 2,000 regiments that fought for the Union. They truly earned the name "The Fighting Fifteenth"!

The Re-activated 15th NJ - Co. A

The 15th New Jersey today is comprised of individuals with an interest in Civil War history. The unit actively particpates in a number of Civil War related events and activities each year from re-enacting and living history, to team competition firing of Civil War weapons with the North-South Skirmish Association (N-SSA). Members of any age are welcome (however you must be 16 to be an N-SSA member). Membership is open to all and beginners are welcome. Musicians are needed and fife and drum instruction is available.

The 15th is located in Central New Jersey and meets regularly on the third Wednesday of every month.
