Flow Snake by Rebecca Chaky, machine pieced and hand quilted, 43"x45", 1983. This design forms a two-color pattern. There is a single line of quilting at the boundary of the orange and blue fabrics.
The idea for this quilt came from the December 1976 issue of Scientific American, pages 124-133, a Martin Gardner article on fractals. This is actually a flow snake of order 3, the true fractal being the limiting case of the nth order. Each order seems to have about 7 times the number of pieces of the last order. The true fractal would then have an infinite number of pieces, and is not on Rebecca's list of future projects.
