The Trivia of Southern Africa

Hello! My name is Matthew Grote, and I collect the Trivias of Southern Africa. This Genus is closely related to the Cypraea- but far less popular with collectors. (Most Trivias are less than 30mm). Colors range from mauve to tan to white. Trivias can be broadly classified as smooth or ribbed. The interest and beauty I find in the Trivia is derived from their form. Very few have any pattern or much color. You'll find a few shells illustrated here. I'll add more in the course of time. For further information on Trivias read William R. Liltved's Cowries and their Relatives of Southern Africa.

These shells are from my collection and are scanned from my photographs (except the 3 that are noted as such). Please read my article on Trivia calvariola "Determining Trivia calvariola" in the March 1997 issue of the Strandloper. (email Dr. Mike Cortie at MIKEC@MSINFO.MINTEK.AC.ZA for further details of the magazine.) It has been remarked upon that I show no apertures, I will ammend this with my next batch! Please enjoy my page's limited scope, and email with comments. Sincerely, Matt
