Many homeschoolers get in and go to college. The best way to ensure that the college experience will be in your future is to really push academics and to be broad. Don't be too focused on academics. My feelings on this is that the more you experience (and academics is just a specific type of experience) the more reality you can be immersed in. Also the more things you experience and learn the more unique your Homeschooling experience will be. The difference is not just between high schools but unique among other homeschoolers.
College is a much better version of High school. :) That's my take on college. Everyone is different so this statement might not be exactly correct. I feel the first goal of homeschooling should be learning to learn, then taking your own initiative to learn, and lastly functioning in society.
Many high schoolers have only being in a world of controlled environments. This is not optimal to the sudden placement of the person into the the chaotic and even harsh place we homeschoolers call the real world. This is really where homeschoolers really excel. When they get to college they have already adapted to learning on their own as well as living in a world of imperfections and self command. It must be noted that there are homeschoolers that are going into college that are not like this. This is not wrong. This students just have yet to learn which they haven't yet come across on their own.
Getting into college is a stressful period of time, especially for parents. Did you (the parents :) do a good enough job of education? Well, you'll find out when you get those letters back. One good sign for the homeschooler is that of not being able to describe their education within the confines of the College application! From personal experience I can say that I had a VERY difficult time reducing my experiences to such a standard composition. Just remember that homeschoolers are in a unique situation to use the essay to really push the application reviews to accept homeschoolers.
I feel that my college essays weren't perfect but none really can ever be. I wrote about (I'll give you 3 choices and the first two don't count) homeschooling. I wrote about what I did in homeschool, why I did it, how it helped me, as well as a comparision to me public high schools (with the strong and weak points of both homeschool and public high school). My reason for having the weaknesses of homeschooling was more to be complete and hence be more impressed with the essay in that I can cover things that normally can't covered.
I took the PSATs, SATs 2 times, the SAT II Physics, and the SAT II Calculus B. My PSATs were 70% that of my last SAT and my first SAT was about 80% of my final SAT. This goes to show two things. First, for the SATs nothing is better than experiencing the SAT so if you must take it again. Second, take an SAT Prep course. It helps a lot. My brother is going through the process right now. He isn't have much fun but it's one of steps tward a better tomorrow.
Once a homeschooler, always a homeschooler. Homeschooling for me is more a philosophy than an education model. This might be the reason why you might consider homeschooling through college. There are remote learning centers. Other than this, consider that the world is your environment, learn from it. You don't need to go to college to continue your education. College is for getting the advanced education in a structured way. This is useful formany people especially those going into technology (like computer science, any kind of Engineering, etc)
Here is a List of Colleges and Universities that accept homeschooled students.
