The Issues
- Will not support audio in online telegaming at speeds
higher than 14,400
- Will not support full duplex audio in Internet telephony
at speeds higher than 14,400
- Will not support digital joysticks
- Often will not support even basic MIDI or WAV at speeds
higher than 14,400 and results in intolerable "system
hang" when it does
- Provides poor MIDI audio support (even OFFLINE!)
- Provides poor MPEG support
- Incompatible with a lengthy list of software, including
even IBM produced voice-type applications.
- Will not support DirectX 5.0 / minimal support for DirectX 3.0
only via the problematic 20D drivers
- Modem connection very unstable, frequently drops carrier
- Original drivers very delicate and easily corrupted, requiring frequent reinstallation.
- All attempts at upgrades to date have been totally user
unfriendly and buggy, often more "downgrade" than upgrade
- Advertised as "software upgradable", since dropping
MWAVE IBM states that there will be no further upgrades
(no possibility of future 56k support)
- Consumes an unreasonable amount of resources (4 IRQ's!)
limiting the potential for PC upgradability.
Without any question the MWAVE card fails miserably in many
areas and is by no means worthy of inclusion in a "cutting-edge"
multimedia system.
