Don's hillclimb R8

Hobbies and Interests:Photography, computers, and sports car racing which I satisfy by hillclimbing my '63 R8 which was an R-1130. I have a fairly severe case of Renault mania.

I came into posession of this '63 R8 when a friend rolled it in the rain west of State College. (It had bias ply Michelins on the back and X's on the front.I warned them.) I built it for the ''75 season after another friend rolled its predecessor at Summit Point. We won my class championship against well prepared VW opposition for the year. It then sat for ten years while other things were going on and came back as a GT5 car.
Over the years it has acquired a roll cage, a fully adjustable front end, a fuel cell in an aluminium box where the passenger used to sit with the battery in a marine box were his feet were and a set of 13 inch aluminium wheels. With 20 inch high Hoosier racing tires fitted it's too low to get a floor jack under. Coming back down a hill the inner end of the A arms smack the ground on bumps. With 7/8 inch front sway bar fitted, it runs flat sweepers with one paw in the air. Spectators seem to like this. Induction is handled by a Weber 36 DCD 7 on a modified R10 inlet manifold. The porting was done by a dirt track engine builder and the exhaust escapes through a custom built header. The front mounted radiator appears to be a complete success. On a day when temperatures hit 91 f, the engine temperature never exceded 180 f. We used inch and a half tubing and an R 16 radiator. Now there is really no place for a passenger and the driver must take care where he puts his hands.
