Hilliard leads effort to support Alexis Herman for Cabinet

(Washington, DC) Congressman Earl Hilliard has begun an effort in Congress to support the nomination and successful confirmation of Alabama native Ms. Alexis Herman as Secretary of Labor. Herman, an Assistant to the President and Director of the White House Office of Public Liaison begins her formal Senate confirmation hearings next Tuesday.

Hilliard, who inserted a statement of support for Herman in the Congressional Record, began soliciting Members of Congress today to participate in a Special-Order session before the U.S. House of pro-Alexis Herman supporters. This event will also begin next Tuesday, the same day as Herman’s confirmation hearings begin in the Senate.

Hilliard, in his statement published in the Congressional Record, stated: "Alexis Herman has a lifetime of positive public service which highlights her efforts to improve the progress and lives of women, African-Americans, and Hispanic-Americans. As the President’s Assistant and Director of the White House Office of Public Liaison, she has shown us her savvy, expertise, and experience."

When asked how he believes her chances for confirmation are in the Senate, Hilliard responded: "The Senate Republican Leader has endorsed her nomination after a series of meetings with Ms. Herman. When you take this fact into consideration, along with her sterling record of public service, I am confident that once the whole Senate reviews her record, they will confirm her."

Hilliard’s Special-Orders may be viewed on C-SPAN next Tuesday at approximately 12:30pm (EST) and at the end of the legislative day on Tuesday, March 18, 1997.
