Health Benefits of Drinking Green Tea

Green tea linked to skin cell rejuvenation

Research into the health-promoting properties of green tea is yielding information that may lead to new treatments for skin diseases and wounds.
Dr. Stephen Hsu, a cell biologist in the Medical College of Georgia Department of Oral Biology, has uncovered a wealth of information about green tea in the last few years. Most importantly, he helped determine that compounds in green tea called polyphenols help eliminate free radicals, which can cause cancer by altering DNA. He also found that polyphenols safeguard healthy cells while ushering cancer cells to their death.
He recently began studying the most abundant green tea polyphenol, EGCG. Using pooled human keratinocytes (skin cells), he and his colleagues studied the normal growth of the skin cells and compared it to the growth of the cells when exposed to EGCG.
To their astonishment, they found that EGCG reactivated dying skin cells. "Cells that migrate toward the surface of the skin normally live about 28 days, and by day 20, they basically sit on the upper layer of the skin getting ready to die," Dr. Hsu said. "But EGCG reactivates them. I was so surprised."
The skin consists of three layers: the epidermis (outer layer), dermis (mid-layer) and hypodermis (inner layer). Dr. Hsu learned that green tea polyphenols aren't absorbed beyond the epidermis, so any benefits are limited to that outer layer of skin. But the benefits, he stressed, seem significant.
Cells in the epidermis, or keratinocytes, are in a constant state of renewal. The newly formed cells, stem cells, are undifferentiated but rapidly dividing. As they push through the epidermis, they begin differentiating. During this migration and differentiation process, the cells are very active, expending and consuming vast amounts of energy.
Once they reach the surface of the skin, their metabolic activity slows dramatically and they prepare to die, while forming a water-proof, sheet-like structure. As they die off about a month into their life cycle, they are replaced by another wave of migrating cells supplied by stem cells, starting the process all over again.
But EGCG seems to be a fountain of youth for skin cells. "When exposed to EGCG, the old cells found in the upper layers of the epidermis appear to start dividing again," Dr. Hsu said. "They make DNA and produce more energy. They are reactivated. There are lots of unknowns-this is the first step into the door-but if we can energize dying skin cells, we can probably improve the skin condition."
In addition, the researchers found that EGCG accelerates the differentiation process among new cells.
Combining these effects of EGCG on skin cells in different layers of the epidermis, Dr. Hsu noted potential benefits for skin conditions as diverse as aphthous ulcers, psoriasis, rosascea, wrinkles and wounds. "If skin cells surrounding wounds or infections don't heal in time, fibroblasts in the connective tissue may rush in to fill the void and cause scar tissue formation," he said. "If we can spur the skin cells to differentiate and proliferate, we can potentially accelerate the wound-healing process and prevent scarring."
This potential benefit is particularly exciting for conditions such as diabetes, which stubbornly inhibits the wound-healing process, Dr. Hsu said.
He and his colleagues hope to identify dermatologists interested in collaborating on clinical studies of EGCG and other polyphenols on patients.

This is a Premium Green Tea

(Camellia Sinensis)--perfect for drinking hot or iced.

It comes from the renowned Shizuoka Prefecture tea-growing district of Japan.

Asians have believed in the health benefits of green tea for generations and now our Doctors are believers.

Recently Westerners have begun switching to green tea as they become health conscious.

SOTA Instant Japanese Green Tea is the next step in the evolution of this centuries old drink and here is why:

With regular brewed teas, you throw away nutrients that are not water soluble with the tea leaves.  The finely ground leaves in SOTA Instant Japanese Green Tea mix into the drink, and therefore you get all the benefits.   These benefits can be very important, ask Dr. Atkins or Dr. Weil.

Dr. Robert Atkins in Age-Defying Diet Revolution

I think the most promising areas of green tea research right now is in treating arthritis.  The antioxidant power of the green tea's polyphenols blocks the pathway of the Cox-2 enzyme, which is a major cause of the inflammation and pain of arthritis.  The polyphenols work in very much the same way as the new, heavily advertised antiarthritis drugs such as CelebrexR, except that the tea doesn't have the side effects--or a high cost.

Tea also has a strong antibacterial effect.  Drinking a cup of tea after a meal helps prevent cavities and gum disease because the polyphenols kill the bacteria that cause these diseases.  We know from other research that there's a high correlation between gum disease and heart disease.  Could that be one reason for the lower heart risk among tea drinkers?

Question to Dr. Weil--- What's your opinion of "green drinks" such as wheat-grass juice and alfalfa juice?

I'm not a fan of these drinks.  Actually, my preferred green drink is green tea, which has many demonstrated health benefits--from reducing risk of cancer and heart disease to helping fight cavities.

Green Tea Can Help Prevent Rheumatoid Arthritis

Antioxidants in green tea may prevent and reduce the severity of rheumatoid arthritis, according to a study from CWRU's School of Medicine study published in the April 13 issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
The study examined the effects of green tea polyphenols on collagen-induced arthritis in mice, which is similar to rheumatoid arthritis in humans. Polyphenols are chemicals that occur naturally in certain foods, including green tea, and many work as antioxidants to protect the body from oxidative stress that causes disease.
In each of three different study groups, the mice given the green tea polyphenols were significantly less likely to develop arthritis. Of the 18 mice that received the green tea, only eight (44 percent) developed arthritis. Among the 18 mice that did not receive the green tea, all but one (94 percent) developed arthritis. In addition, researchers noted that the eight arthritic mice that received the green tea polyphenols developed less severe forms of arthritis.
"For many generations, in some parts of the world -- including India, China and Japan -- green tea has been considered to possess health-promoting potential by preventing many illnesses that cause substantial mortality and morbidity in humans," said lead author Tariq M. Haqqi, associate professor of medicine at CWRU.

INSTANT  TEAS   RESEARCH  ABSTRACT

Antimutagenicity and catechin content of soluble instant teas

Constable, N. Varga, J. Richoz and RH. Stadler Nestec Ltd Research Centre, Vers-Chez-les-Blanc, PO Box44, Ch-1000 Lausanne 26 Switzerland, March 1996 Issue Mutagenesis.

The antimutagenic properties of soluble instant teas were examined using the bacterial Ames assay. Inhibition of the numbers of revertants induced from a number of known mutagens indicates that aqueous extracts of instant teas have antimutagenic activity and antioxidative properties, and can inhibit nitrosation reactions. Despite a significant reduction in the amounts of major green tea catechins, quantified using reversed-phase HPLC with electrochemical detection, no differences in antimutagenicity were observed between the instant teas, a black fermented tea and a green tea. Oxidation of polyphenolic compounds which occurs during the production of instant tea does not therefore decrease the antioxidant, free radical scavenging and antimutagenic properties. This suggests that catechins are not the only compounds responsible for the protective effects of teas.

Can Drinking Green Tea Benefit People with Alzheimer's Disease?

Delegates at the 1st International Quality Research in Dementia conference in London will this afternoon hear new research on the possible benefits to older people and people with Alzheimer's disease or vascular dementia from drinking green tea.
The study of 485 people over age 80 -- conducted by Saga Medical School in Japan and funded by the Japanese Ministry of Education -- found that 96 per cent of those people who drank 10 cups of green tea a day did not show any cognitive impairment within 2 years. In contrast, 12 per cent of those people who drank less than 3 cups of green tea a day showed a cognitive decline over two years.
Previous research has shown green tea to be effective in preventing vascular diseases such as stroke. But this is the first study to look at the possible protective effects of drinking Japanese green tea against cognitive impairment in older people. Alcohol, coffee drinking and stress were found to disturb the protective effects of green tea in the study.

Dr Richard Harvey, director of research at the Alzheimer's Society, commented:
'This paper is just one example of the varied nature of research into the causes, cure and care of dementia taking place around the world. I am pleased that Quality Research in Dementia has provided a suitable forum for its first hearing.'

Green Tea Boost Body’s Defense April 2003

Researchers report in the Proceedings of the National Institute of Health Academy of Science that in tea chemical that boosts the body’s defense fivefold against disease. The chemical primes immune system cells to attack bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Dr. Jack F. Bukowshi and Women’s Hospital in Boston and Harvard Medical School said he and his co-researchers isolated the chemical. Bukowski said L-theanine is broken down in the liver to ethytamine that primes the response of an immune blood cell called the gamma-delta T cell.

New Research Confirms Green Tea Supplement Provides Best Antioxidant Protection

Surpasses Vitamins E, C and Red Wine

SIMI VALLEY, Calif., Sept. 11 -- Researchers at the University of
Kansas have found new evidence confirming that a compound in a green tea
supplement provides stronger damage protection of cells and their genetic
material (DNA) than the well-known antioxidants vitamins E and C and the
antioxidant compound in red wine.
Announced today at the American Chemical Society annual meeting, the first
side-by-side comparative antioxidant study led to an investigation of the
protective power of epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) against that of vitamins E
and C, in addition to red wine and other teas. EGCG is a member of the family
of chemicals known as polyphenols, antioxidant compounds which are found in
green tea. EGCG and other green tea polyphenols work as antioxidants in the
body. Antioxidants are compounds that attack the body's free radicals, which
cause cellular damage including DNA (genetic material) breakage.
The research provides further evidence of the ability of EGCG to protect
against cellular damage. The research team used the supplement, Tegreen
97TM which, comprised of 97 percent polyphenols, has a 4-fold higher
concentration of EGCG than traditional green tea. The research was also the
first of its kind to use the Ames test, a widely used test for mutagenic
agents, to determine the effectiveness of the green tea compound in the form
of Tegreen in protecting against cellular damage.
"The antioxidants in tea are more effective than the vitamins that are
usually construed to be antioxidants," said Dr. John Weisburger, senior
member, American Health Foundation. He adds, "We need both but green tea is
more effective."
Using the Ames test, EGCG was added to DNA samples challenged with
peroxide, a recognized powerful free radical. The research found EGCG to be a
powerful antioxidant, offering 63 percent protection from DNA damage. The
level of protection of DNA samples in the presence of Tegreen were
significantly higher when compared with a control group of DNA without
Tegreen. In a side-by-side comparison using equivalent concentrations,
vitamin E was found to be much less protective against damaged cell growth
than EGCG or Tegreen, while vitamin C showed almost no protective activity at
the same concentration. Specifically, EGCG was approximately 100 times more
effective than vitamin C, 25 times more effective than vitamin E, and nearly
twice as effective as red wine.
Bill McGlashan, president of Pharmanex, Inc., the company that
manufactures Tegreen, called the study very promising. "This confirms that
Tegreen offers one of the strongest levels of antioxidant protection. Tegreen
is a natural extract, standardized to ensure the highest levels of polyphenols
available in any dietary supplement on the market today," McGlashan said.
"Green teas may be different, however when you take a standardized
supplement you know you are getting what you need," according to Georges M.
Halpern, M.D., Ph.D., professor emeritus of medicine, University of
California, and antioxidant researcher.
Tegreen, like green tea, provides protection against the damage caused by
cigarette smoke, pollution, stress and other toxins. Each capsule of Tegreen
provides the equivalent of about 4 cups of traditionally brewed green tea, but
without the stimulating effects of excess caffeine. The polyphenol content of
green tea is not known to be associated with any significant side effects or
toxicity.
Green tea is widely consumed in East Asia and its health benefits have
been demonstrated in China for thousands of years. In extensive
epidemiological studies in Asia, totaling more than 100,000 people for study
periods of up to 10 years, daily consumption of four or more cups of a green
tea beverage has been associated with significant overall good health
maintenance in subjects, even after adjustments are made for age, smoking and
alcohol consumption.
While further study is needed, this research adds support to an increasing
body of evidence that the polyphenols in green tea are strongly linked to
protection against cellular damage.
Tegreen 97 can be found in the vitamin or herbal remedy section of major
retail chains such as CVS, Sav-0n, Target, Walgreen's, Wal-Mart, Longs Drugs
