Contemporary Pharmaceutical Compounding

Compounding is the pharmacists heritage. To quote Angele D'Angelo, M.S., P.D., Executive Editorial Director of "U.S. Pharmacist"......

"Rx M&F... The Latin Receipe. Misce et Fiat always meant that a physician was writing to his colleague, the pharmacist. Then "secundum artem." the pharmacist would compound the ingredients into a medication. Before materia medica became pharmacology, pharmacists studied the physical and chemical properties of drugs in order to combine the ingredients safely. The physician was not required to know if one ingredient was compatible with the other. Therefore "secundum artem" was the pharmacist's responsibility to overcome any incompatibilities and prepare a suitable product. No other profession lays claim to this nor should we allow them to. Even when modern scientific technologies have produced new chemical entities, the ability of the pharmacist to combine one or more chemicals into a new preparation, or process the existing dosage form into one that is better suited to the patient's needs, has remained the domain of the pharmacist."
