Northeast Ohio Drive-In Tour: Midway

Tour of Northeast Ohio Drive-in Theatres - The Midway

Midway Drive-In, State Route 59, 1/2 mile east of Kent, west of Ravenna Ohio. 330-296-9829. Capacity 598 cars. Two screens.

It would be hard to top owner John Knepp's enthusiasm for the drive-in. This drive-in is staffed by a great, enthusiastic staff. Manager Dave Mitchell has added a drive-in museum display case in the concession stand with many great drive-in artifacts.

There is a new audio trailer played before the show, new concession items such as sloppy fries have been a big hit with the patrons of the Midway in 2001. In late 2001, a 5 minute intermission trailer was added between shows.

Since Knepp bought the drive-in from the Vogels in 1990, there have been improvements each season. Screen 2 was added to the back of the lot. The Vogel screen tower was updated with trinkets in 1998. The awesome stereo sound system was added in 99. A great audio trailer was added between movies advertising P-I-C mosquito coils and concession items. Restrooms were remodeled in 1999 and 2000. A drive-in museum display case and a Sunday cruise-in series was added in 2000. The front screen tower, destroyed by a storm in December 2000 was replaced with a Selby in time for the May, 2001 opening. A new pre-show audio CD intermixes 50's music with classic drive-in audio trailers.

There is a stereo FM sound system on both screens. Speakers on top of the concession stand project a great soundtrack to the movie that can be heard in the front part of lot 1. Thus, if you are sitting outside, you don't have to use your car radio.

$13 per carload in 2002.

Originally designed by famed architect Jack Vogel, the Midway had featured the last standing sleek blue screen tower designed by Vogel. This screen tower was destroyed by a storm in December 2000. Kudos to owner John Knepp for rebuilding. The new screen 1 screentower is a large Selby tower. The screen tower in the 1997 pictures below is no longer standing. There is still evidence that this was a Vogel-design - the diamond & flags sign is similar to the signage Vogel used at the still-standing Winter and Bengies ozoners.
