Unseasonably cool temperatures and low humidity allowed for some big time performances at Meet #5 of the Metro Harriers Track and Field Challenge.
The shot put was the big event as four athletes had career best throws. Glen Edwards (Lansdowne Track Club who will be a junior next year) had the performance of the night to win the Shot Put. Teammate Ryan Costin (who recently graduated), was close behind heaving the iron ball 51 feet, 2 inches.
Emily Deinlein (North County TC who will be a senior next year) continues to dramatically improve. She has increased her performance by five feet this summer, as she won the shot put with a toss of 35 feet 5 inches. Leslie Donnelly (Southern TC) has unlimited potential and placed second with a throw of 34 feet 4 inches.
The distance runners took advantage of the cool weather. Ted Poulos (Potomac Valley TC) had two very strong kicks to capture his second double in a row in the 1500 (4:25), and the 3000 (9:29). Salisbury State's Steve Jacobs was second in both races (4:26 & 9:32). University of Delaware Junior Matt Moore finished third in the 3000 in 9:37.
The masters were led by Robert Drysdale (Mid Shore TC), third overall in the 1500 in 4:29, and Dave Webster (Annapolis Striders), fifth overall in the 3000 in 10:02.
North County freshmen April Penn had the distance double of 5:54 (1500) and 13:04 (3000). Another North County freshmen Natalie Scurto won the 800 in 2:32.
Holy Family Track Club sprinter Ehinomen Olumese had her fourth sprint double in 5 meets capturing the 100 (12.7) and 200 (27.5).
Old Mill's Stephan Gray showed his explosive start and easitly won the 100 (10.9). Sean Freshwater (Chesapeake) was very impressive in blitzing the field in the 200 (22.0).
West Virginia University pole vaulter Laura Paugh had her highest leap of the season (9'6"0 to win the women's pole vault.
