Salisbury All-Conference Harriers Steve Jacobs and Kelsey Scheitlin Claim Championships
Sophomore Steve Jacobs went wire to wire easily winning the Metro harriers Sixth Annual 3 Mile Cross Country Championship in 16 minutes 50 seconds. Earlier this year Steve finished second in the 3000 at the Metro Harriers Track & Field Championships in 9:32. Second place went to the ever-improving North County sophomore Joe Wojciechowski in 17 minutes 46 seconds. Joe finished 48th overall in the 4A State Meet in 18:30 at Hereford last week. Third Place went to Chesapeake freshman Tom Parker in 18:53, teammates Francis putman (20:01) and Chris Rosen (20:26) placed seventh and eighth respectively. Fifth place overall went to 13 year old eighth grader Brett Kirchner of Susquehannock, Pennsylvania (19:11). Oregon Track Club member Tim Wehrkamp had a strong finish to capture the masters division in 19:04.Metro Harriers teammates Ed Harte (19:38) and Jim Knost (20:43) were second and third masters. Salisbury freshman Kelsey Scheitlen blitzed the field taking the women's championship in 20:33. "I have a lot of respect for this course," Kelsey said of Baybrook Park's hilly terrain. "We don't have hills in Salisbury." North County junior Rachel Clary's 22:38 was a forty-seven second improvement on her time in the regional championship race help two weeks ago on the same course. Rachel missed the first half of the season with a stress fracture. Teammates April Penn (23:16) and Christine Stagg (23:38) were third and forth respectively. Watch out for the North County girls team next year. Arlean McCleary was the first women's master running 37:37 in her first cross country race since college. "It's a '40' thing," Arlean said of her effort after the race.
