ANSWER:

I start riding all of my young horses with just a halter in the round pen. I have three that I can ride with just a string around their neck.

  
This is a mare I raised out of my stallion D### Yankee. I am riding her with no bit, just a piece of leather rein around her neck and you can see from the picture and the shadows that she is fox trotting.
