MGAP Working Toward Mark Grant's Enshrinement
In Baseball Hall of Fame

[August 8, 2001] The MGAP has begun a campaign to get former pitcher Mark Grant enshrined in the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY.

"Sure, Mark's career stats don't quite measure up to Steve Carlton's or Nolan Ryan's," said a spokesman, "but we believe that comparing him to those greats is unfair. It's easy to win 300 games when your team trots you out there every fifth day for 20 years, but if you end up stuck in middle relief like Mark was for most of his career, the victories don't exactly pile up."

The group's endeavor began at the MGAP's "Visit To The Vet." Their seven-foot "Mark Grant for Hall of Fame!!" banner got TV time in San Diego, and while that's a start, they know there's plenty of work left to do.

"It's going to take a lot more than one banner at one ballgame to get Mark into the Hall," the spokesman said. "Our first problem is that he didn't play long enough to be eligible for the ballot. I'd love to see him pitch an inning or two when the rosters expand in September, just to give him the extra time he needs. But we're going to work on getting him in as a broadcaster, too. One way or another, Mark Grant will be a Hall of Famer."
